well irishmike, my pedal is made to add more distortion to my playing. My friend Mason has one that echoes whatever he plays.

And the way i hook mine up is this: there is an input and an output place where you can put in amp cords. one side goes into the input and the other side of that goes into the amp. and the other cord goes into the output and the guitar.

Yes, they hook to the input of your amp.

There are so many pedals on the market that do so many different sounds. I would check them out at a store you like. That will give you an idea what they do.

to hook up a effects pedal you need to have a guitar (with a cord) , a amp , and a effects pedal ( some pedals need a power cord ) , and then another cord .

Well, wah pedals do exactly what their name implies. they make a "wah-wah" sound. its kind of hard to explain the sound unless you've heard it. im sure you can find videos on youtube that show what they do. and there are a lot of different kinds of pedals, that all do different things. they really let you customize your sound, and come in handy when you need a certain sound or effect. i dont have any pedals myself, but once i get a better amp, i'll probably get one or two. bad thing is, they're a little on the expensove side....

Here is a good website that kinda explains what type of sound different pedal types produce.
