As I check out the various guitar sites which have buy and sell areas, I get a kick out of ads like these (fictitious but you get the idea): "Hurry! Joe Blow Thunder Crunch Pickup. Expertly reliced and IMO, the best pickup on the planet! $300 plus shipping."; like we are all supposed to know whom this John Doe is. I'd venture to guess that it is the OP who switched a magnet or set of polepieces in some beat to hell Asian pickup. Consider too, if said pickup is that phenomenal, why would he want to unload it? What gets me is the fact that for his ridiculous asking price, one could get a decent used guitar.

And then there are several people who shall remain anonymous. With this group, it seems that every piece of equipment, be it a guitar, part of a guitar or pedal they get their hands on, they have to experiment with it and once they've (per them) 'upgraded' it (read, "pretty much ruined") it, here too, they try to unload it for some ridiculous amount of money touting how valuable an asset it is.

Lastly, the "Rare" ads such as (again, fictitious but you get the idea): "Rare, 1986 Ibanez Artist lawsuit guitar. Excellent condition for a 32 year old guitar (note the incorrect arithmetic). Frets have been expertly customized by Shlong Louie of Beer Fart Guitars. Comes with a non-original case and upgraded (whatever that means) pickups/electronics! $1,800 plus shipping." Rare? Maybe to him. Lawsuit? This is an original Ibanez design. I've never heard of an original designer of anything suing themselves. Of course, we all are supposed to be super familiar with Shlong Louie and Beer Fart Guitars. $1,800? 'Nuff said.

Have any of you seen some equally (or more) ludicrous ads? Please join in and post some of the nonsensical ads you've come across.

Look no further than Craig's List for ads like the ones you've described. I've seen Squier Affinity Strats on there going for over $300.00 by people who have no clue at all. They think just because it says Fender in tiny letters on the headstock, that it's a real Fender Strat and they go and advertise it as such.

$300 will buy you a decent new guitar. Not a great one, but you can certainly get a decent Epiphone, Squier or Ibanez for that price.
And if buying pick-ups, you can get a lot of pickup for $300 from e.g. Seymour Duncan, DiMarzio and other well-known names.

I know a guy who bought his 2002 AD Fat Strat early in 2003. In '03 the Cannuck buck was at an all time low so I think he paid like $2,300 for it, exorbitant by today's standards. He digs it out once a year and strums 3 chords (badly) for 10 minutes and re-cases it. It is, in every respect, a 12 year old brand new guitar which he bugs me to buy from him every 6 months or so. He gets angry with me when I tell him his asking price of $2K is more than double what it's worth on the used market.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

kind of the opposite, my local music store told me the bluebook value for my old Strat's pre-89 Laces was about $50 to the value of an axe. The sets go for $150 on a good day and $100 on a $@!& day. Madness, I tell you.

They didn't even attempt to appraise the Dimarzio trem, they didn't know what it was, or the fact that it even existed.

I like the ads where the guy's clearly trying to talk up an average guitar into something special. You can sense the lies and desperation in this one, who the hell is Neil Orrell? Even Google doesn't know.

I especially liked the spotted maple top. Glad I spalted that one.

We also get a lot of "Stratocastors" round here. Probably because that's how a lot of people talk around Manchester.

You can weed out the BS sellers by asking a few intelligent questions about their gear for sale. Most don't have a clue in my experiences.
