This is actually music related since I'm trying to install it on my recording computer so that I can install EZ Drummer2. I think some of you will get a chuckle from this.
I installed Win 8 Pro, but can't activate it. I Googled the problem and one of the alternatives is to activate over the phone. I had to type SLUI 04 into search and it would give me a phone number to call. I did and the only number that came up is in Afghanistan, seriously. The drop down menu is greyed and Afghanistan is the only option.
Just for giggles, I called it, busy. I guess they've got a lot going on over there.
I'm pretty sure the copy of Win 8 that I got is legit. The packaging is accurate, there's two disks, 32 and 64 bit. Both disks have the hologram around the center circle.

Does anyone have a phone number for activating Win8 in the United States? When I Google that, I just get the same instructions that brings up Afghanistan. I hate computers!

Can you temp hook your computer to the internet and activate online? EZD2 looks really cool, I played around with first one and really liked it. They reported on my local news that win 10 will be out in less than a year for free (I'll believe it when I see it). I would try to find a number for MS US support and let them give you the phone number for activation in the US or Canada.

It won't activate online. So, one of the solutions is to call.

That would be similar to calling Afghanistan. Ebay purchase. I'm not sure yet if I got hosed. Activation seems to be a common problem with Win8.

You probably got hosed - my guess is you bought a copy that has already been activated in Afghanistan, and thus cannot be activated.

Here are instructions for how you're supposed to find the number for your country:

If you do have any problems, press Microsoft hard to activate it anyway. I've heard of people getting an activation after complaining enough. I would not recommend this as a standard practice, but you did pay for it and it's not going to hurt them to help you out.

I've read on Techbeat that Windows 10 will come with a better activation policy.

Apparently M$ decided to stop the development of Windows 9 and drop support from previous versions of IE.

No. Windows 10 is what was going to be Windows 9. Marketing decided to skip a number to distance themselves from the 8s.

NT 6.0 = Windows Vista
NT 6.1 = Windows 7
NT 6.2 = Windows 8
NT 6.3 = Windows 8.1
NT 6.4 = Windows 10

My Daughter has windows 8 pre-installed on her laptop .It's a load of rubbish with way too many bells and whistles, microstupid knows they cocked up with 8 (although they would never admit it) and apparently the start menu is being resurrected for win 10, (but that is their idea, not because of the thousands of internet pages complaining about the lack of it in 8 )

I've both Windows 8 and 8.1 Pro w/ WMC.

The 8.1 DVD I burned from an ISO image does not contain Update 1.

Image was downloaded from a web installer using the 8.0 product key.

On certain occasions the product key from WMC for Win 8 doesn't work with Win 8.1.

An error occurred, try again

To avoid this problem it's advisable to not activate the O/S via phone but replace the generic KMS key with the Win 8 serial number.

Microsoft announced the release of an Update 2 for Windows 8.1 which adds full-fledged functionality to the Start Menu.

Wow! I'm getting a new PC before year's end and I was looking at Win 8.1. I'm told it's only worth if you use a touch screen. I hadn't planned on buying one. My current machine is 9+ years old and has served me well, but it's time for a new one.

I've put off buying new software in anticipation of the PC purchase. I need a new DAW, though, ACID Pro 7 works well enough, but version 8 doesn't appear to be coming in my lifetime.

Windows 8 is nice for touch and tablet devices but a nightmare for desktop and notebook users.

Certainly 8.1 brought back the Start menu but without the full-fledged functionality from the previous versions of Windows. Update 2 and the upcoming Windows 10 release will restore that feature.

One thing I dislike with Windows 8 and the later versions of the OS is their blocky visual style; it looks awful.

I bought my first PC in the early 80's. Maybe 1982? 1981? I forget exactly. Not exactly but roughly around the time the IBM PC-XT came out. My first O/S was DOS 1.0 That said, I am intimately acquainted with how you guys get so sick of hearing this because I hated it too for 30+ years.

But ......

I am soooo glad I finally broke down and bought a Mac. The learning curve was steeper than I expected and the hardware is definitely expensive but once you get over that initial wallet shock and past the relearning stage there's just no comparison. Apple haters are welcome to their opinions but it won't change the fact that they're still wrong. Sorry. I resisted as long as I could. I think you have to agree that 30+ years of persistence is a valiant effort. Now that I'm in the other universe I wish I hadn't been so stubborn all those years. I know of the vehement opposition a post like this can generate. The hate messages can begin anytime. It won't disturb my inner peace. I have so much more patience now because I don't have to deal with the relentless onslaught of Windows frustrations. I no longer get to pride myself as being the guy all my friends go to for computer help because I am slowly losing touch with all the current tips and tricks but hey, I'm fine with that.
