I mostly play on clean. But from time to time I use just a little distortion. Just to get to the spot where the clean and crunch mix so you get that harsh clean. :D (I hope I described this good) You know - the dirty blues sound...

Wow. Surprising array of replies. Thanks to all.

'Agree there are some pieces which would not sound elevator-music clean.

'Although, 'have heard WAY toned-down "Purple Haze" in an elevator in Chicago. Yes, for real. 'Wanted to cry for Jimi.

And some instruments are just not ever thought of as jazzbox-in-a-solidbody suit. Or amps.

As a reggae rhythm player, I play almost exclusively clean.
I'll make 'er a little muddy for some solo's or melodical fills, but mostly, I'm all clean.

I like to play with a bit of distortion, but I also like having the option of backing it off/cleaning it up with my volume control for a different attack.

I used to use Marshall JCM 800 amps years ago, they were good but I could never get any clarity out of them, and not much variety in sound either without constantly tweaking the controls. I discovered old Blackface (Bassman heads preferred) and Silverface (depending on the model) Fender amps, and found exactly what I was looking for.

It's a lot easier to dirty up a clean amp with a pedal and get a decent sound, than it is to try to clean up a dirty sounding amp.

Most of the time I use a Dyna-Comp and a little reverb, but just recently I dusted off my old pedals and dragged out my PODxt to add a little spice to my sound.

I've got a 26 year old Dyna Comp and just love it. Best compressor out there in my book.

Otherwise, some dirt and drive in that tone is probably not only encouraged, but desired.

A lot of that comes through the amp--especially if you use a tube amp.
And as I said, sometimes I use my distortion pedal to cut through the other instruments--not for fuzz. Most people listening wouldn't know I'm using a distortion pedal--well some guitarists and sound engineers would, but a lot of others wouldn't. It's still not clean.

Still I do advise everybody does do some practicing clean--especially unplugged--to work on technique--so the amp and effects aren't hiding your weaknesses.

I usually use distortion on riffs/power chords otherwise I find it better to play on clean for things like scales/picked-pieces. 'Cause with too much distortion on picked pieces, like solos, it just sounds like a bunch of garbage unless you know how how to handle the distortion.

Or maybe I'm just saying that 'cause my amp is kinda crappy.

I love the clean channel, almost all Nirvana sounds good on it.

Overall, yes I do play mostly a clean. I do however like my tone to break up with a little tube saturation if I want it to (if you know what I mean).
