I like to stay in that sweet spot. Clean but a little crunchy with increased attack.

Well, my undies are clean...and half the time I don't bother plugging in when practicing.

Does this count?

I'll drive the preamp to get the slight distortion you hear from SRV. These Custom Shop TX Specials really capture that sound with the Blues Junior up around 11 1/2 volume and the fat switch in, master around 2 to save my ears, and the eq at 7s across. I love that tone. To clean up, I just back down to 6 on the volume and up the master a bit - sweet clean tone.

Hello JSJH,

Mostly I'm a clean player,
except for the mistakes I make.

Occasionally I have days where
I bang out the noise.

Cheers.

Clean most of the time - I don't own a distortion pedal, but I do have a Bad Monkey on my wishlist

I spend a lot of time playing my electrics unplugged. So I guess that could count as clean. :)
That allows me to focus on my fingers & technique.

I do use distortion when amplified--depending on the song and my mood. I often use it to get a sharper tone that cuts through--as opposed to fuzz.

Hmm....

I actually thought about this topic overnight.

Quite honestly?

A lot of guitars.....they don't want to be played "cleanly"....at least, not all the time. They are not, by design, or by intention meant to be played in such a manner.

In fact, the ONLY guitars, since we are on the topic, that sort of "want", and are meant to be played cleanly, all the time....

...are acoustics.

Otherwise, some dirt and drive in that tone is probably not only encouraged, but desired.

Even country and jazz players use a wee bit 'o dirt, crunch, and effect in their tone.

To play cleanly, all the time, on any electric guitar, in my honest opinion, is akin to going against the nature of that guitar, and what is was meant to do.

And yes, there is a difference between some dirt, and levels of crunch and drive where the guitar really sings vs. utilizing amp settings that demand insane levels of distortion and low end and expecting the guitar to sound good or behave in those circumstances (because in truth, that is sort of against the nature of most guitars as well....perhaps with the exception of monstrosities like BC Rich, or some other Japanese manufactuers that are designed for that market. But not even those guitars were not meant to have that much mud and distortion tossed upon their tone.)

In my opinion, and since this was sort of encouraged with a thread like this....

The guitar player who plays cleanly ALL THE TIME, is no better, nor deserves any kudoes over the guitar player who uses too much crunch.

Neither implies being true to the instrument that they are holding in their hands...

I play clean most of the time but there are certain songs I play that need some "dirt" such as Uriah heep's Gypsy. My Strat has 57/62s in it and I play through a clean amp (1968 Pro Reverb) so I can't get that bite that a humbucker has. Strats were made with three singles and I can't bring myself to play a Strat with 'buckers BUT I did buy a new Squire that I'm thinking about changing over to humbuckers just for the dirt and my son gets sorta miffed at me when I play his Flying V!

I love to use slight breakup on my amp because it really shows your picking attack. But I think it's good every once and a while to crank er' up and unleash the beast.
