When it comes to Craigslist, much depends on where you're located. I've been dealing in Los Angeles & Las Vegas- fairly big cities, with a big market for gear.

If you're in a small town, yeah, that might not be so good. But, some tips that will help for CL- Take good photos, and give an honest description, and go ahead and pre-empt lowballers by pricing slightly under eBay prices for like items, and tell them what a good deal it is because they don't have to pay for shipping, and they get to see it beforehand.

Next, insist on a phone number in their response, or they get no reply. Ignore replies without phone numbers. But, be sure your ad has all the details so they don't need to ask a quick question. If you're good at reading and dealing with people, you should be able to weed out the lowballers & morons. Talk to them for a few to make sure all their questions are answered, and make it clear that the price is the price, and that under no circumstances will you take less than whatever price you decide to set.

Meet in a public place, and bring a friend if possible, and come heavy. Odds are you won't get ripped off unless it's a REALLY shady area or you're selling a really expensive axe. Ive bought a few Fenders from CL, and had good experiences with nice people. I bought a P bass & a Jazz Bass, and I got good deals for nice specimens. Be smart, pay attention, and trust your gut. Scrutinize the cash they give you, and don't put yourself in an easy position to get robbed.

My other hobby is weapons (I'm an NRA certified pistol/rifle/shotgun instructor) Knives & sticks, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and I'm 215 lbs, so I can handle myself. But, I find that paying attention and being careful is more important than being armed, or knowing how to fight. Avoiding trouble is the best technique, and I've developed that to an almost master level.

You might also want to try facebook, and if your axe is vintage, maybe even etsy. It's cheap to list there, and they supposedly have a higher class of buyer than ebay. Also, try the various marketplaces of guitar/bass forums. A good friend of mine has had good luck selling on TalkBass.com. Try those as well. I've been reading quite a bit here, and you all seem like a good bunch, and I don't want to see anyone get taken. I hope these tips help. I've been selling online since 1999, and I've sold hundreds of items on ebay, craigslist, and others. I hope this helps.
