i always felt Rocky George from Suicidal Tendencies (and fishbone) is a very accomplished guitarist. Seen him live a few times and really couldn't believe how fast and accurate he played.

You probably already know the fact that Tom designed the gtr fx of the "rockman" which he used on stage and recording. He was a musical genious, and perfectionist that unfortunately got a bad break from the music industry. I agree that he is definitely under-rated !! Tom Rocks !!

Yes, Tom Scholz ... I believe ... was an MIT electrical engineering grad. The band Boston was notorious for taking FOREVER to make an album, which drove the record company nuts. They were basically starving him out so that he would hand over ... again, I believe ... Boston's second album, Don't Look Back. Tom did not want to because it was not ready, but had no money. Then he released the Rockman, a device he invented to record directly without having to mic an amp ... and he became a HUGE success, making millions and not having to hand over any album until he felt it was ready. (Boston experts: please feel free to correct me if I "mis-remembered")

You are 100% correct...

Tom Scholz did graduate from MIT with an engineering degree. He worked for Polaroid before joining Boston. If I remember right Boston was actually Barry Goudreau and Sib Hashian's original band called "Mother's Milk". They eventually met up with Fran Sheehan and Brad Delp and would often jam in Fran Sheehan's basement. They met Tom Scholz and were blown away by his skills, not only music, but electrical engineering skills, like building his own recording equipment, building his own amps, pedals, etc.. So, they renamed themselves "Boston" and that was it. The tune "Rock & Roll Band" is almost an autobiographical song of their early days.

Tom Scholz is widely known as a huge perfectionist, and it soon drove a wedge within the band, even as early on as 1978 with their second album "Don't Look Back". He got into legal battles with the record company and their manager and eventually, he just assumed control, taking over the band. It was rumored that he told the rest of the band, "go ahead and do a solo project if you want", so they did. They all recorded on Barry Goudreau's solo album of the same name. Brad Delp was on vocals but was still loyal to Tom Scholz, and was sort of caught in the middle (which probably led to his mental deterioration, and later, tragic suicide). When Tom Scholz found out about the solo project, he wigged out and went off on everyone, thus literally destroying the original band Boston.

Tom Scholz would later design the Rockman and formed Scholz R&D in 1982, while spending -quite literally- YEARS trying to record "Third Stage". He wrote, arranged, played everything (except drums and vocals), and produced all the tracks using the Rockman. He had Brad Delp and Fran Cosmo both on vocals for all future albums. The rest of the original band Boston had long gone their separate ways and recorded solo albums, played in various bands. Barry Goudreau was in Orion the Hunter and RTZ with Sib Hashian on drums. Brad Delp also did double duty on vocals recording with Barry Goudreau, while still working with Tom Scholz, and was tragically caught in the middle.

Today...

Tom Scholz is still the sole member of Boston. Go see the band today and it is just not the same anymore. The trademark lead guitar sound is there, the organ sound is there, but the rest of it is sadly lacking. Tom Scholz seriously needs to put his monstrous ego aside and get back in touch with the original members.

Brad Delp - - R.I.P. Was a tragic loss. :( He was the "voice" of Boston. The only one who comes close is Fran Cosmo.

Barry Goudreau and Sib Hashian are in the band "Ernie and the Automatics", which is a lesser known band with Ernie Boch (son of a well known millionaire auto dealer in the suburbs, west of Boston). Do a search on You Tube and you'll find a few videos. Looks like a fun band playing some great tunes.

Fran Sheehan recorded off and on with Tom Scholz and with the remaining members of Boston on various solo projects. I read that in sometime in 2012, Fran Sheehan had to sort of "retire" from playing bass, as he seriously messed up his left hand in a bike accident. No word if it was a bicycle or motorcycle...

Thank you ButchA, I wondered what happened to the rest of the guys (except for Brad, R.I.P) now I can do some searching and listening.

Uli Jon Roth. You've got to hear this guy live, he plays one of the best sounding guitars I've ever heard and plays it superbly well.

Seconded. He can do much more than the Scorpions solos (not that those were bad - far from it).

And the Sky guitar looks awesome. But $13k, man...
