There's a blues guitarist here in Texas named Alan Haynes, who I think is massively underrated. It's probably just because blues isn't the most popular type of music in the world and Texas blues guitarist are a dime a dozen, but he's one of my favorites.

As far as people who are more well-known go, I'd have to agree about Rory Gallagher and Roy Buchanan. I probably wouldn't have heard either of those guys had it not been for people on this forum mentioning them!

While looking through these posts again, searching for mentions of Billy Gibbons of the band ZZ Top, my thoughts were that he and his band kept the blues rock flame burning brightly through rough times for the style of music. Although fans have always shown their appreciation, 11 gold records and 7 platinum (13 multi-platinum) records, music experts seem to overlook the value of Mr Gibbons atomically positive influence on rock and roll for young listeners for several decades. Here he is with his signature Gretsch Billy-Bo Jupiter Thunderbird, this is the Gretsch guitar that I like the most lol.

I am looking at Brad Whitford of Aerosmith solo in Japan now on Palladia. He seems to be in the background most of the time behind Joe Perry.

Jerry Reed. Well known as a comedian, actor, and singer but great on an acoustic. Wrote a lot of music for Chet Atkins too.

Vince Gill.

Back in 1972 I went to an outdoor concert in a rodeo arena and one of the bands performing there was "Brownsville Station". I had never heard of the band and was not aware at the time that he was the guitar player for the band and the songwriter of the hit, "Smokin' in the boysroom". I had yet to see them on another occasion as a warm-up band and watched them blow away the headlining band (which I won't mention any names). Cub Koda has got to be one of the most under-rated guitar players of all-time ! From Rock-a-billy to In your face Rock n Roll, this guy holds no bars when turning loose on his Tele. Watching him in action is a rarity and an honor and some of the vids are available on youtube, but nothing comes close to feeling his presence on stage.

Someone I had the honour to know from my neck of the woods. A phenomenal guitarist.

Lenny Breau (a favourite of Chet Atkins), but lesser known by others.

Robin Trower, the man has been snubbed by the Rock n Roll Hall of (Shame) Fame for way to long.

I'd say Will Sergeant from Echo & The Bunnymen, who by the way, uses a Fender Telecaster and Jaguar, amongst other instruments.

I'll second Brad Whitford. I think Perry got all the acclaim because of his mystique, but Whitford was just as instrumental in Aerosmith's music.

Let's see... Leo Kottke's already been mentioned. Good.

Steve Cropper. I must confess I wasn't even familiar with his name until a few short years ago, but he seems to have been everywhere in the music I grew up with.

James Wilsey. His molasses-like lead in Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game" made it one of those tunes that made me wanna rush out and buy a Strat. I think he used to call himself "The King of Slow" or some such. Even if you call him a one-trick-pony, it's a really good trick.

A barista girl at my favourite local cafe, Josee Caron (aka "Josee Elise"?) . I have come to learn that she's in this indie punk band "The Mouthbreathers", and then I found these: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gkoOGEHobE8 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjsQMJm4kYc . It's hard to tell from those videos, but she looks like a morph of the Donna Hayward and Audrey Horne characters in the "Twin Peaks" TV series.
There's buried treasure everywhere.
Oh wait - she did a guest bit with her Tele in this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HeSxcejaKQ . (I'm in the audience there somewhere.)

I have worked with backup vocalists, some who want to become headliners, while others prefer to remain in the background for a variety of reasons. Sometimes I shook my head, and suggested that the world was missing out on their potential. Often the backup artist is better than the main performer. Likewise, session players are often an elite group with technique and skills that surpass any visual performance. Sometimes we get to see them come to the foreground. Session guitarists get my vote for being underrated (not by those who use them though :D )

Guitarists Robert White, Eddie "Chank" Willis, Joe Messina, and others of The Funk Brothers, who in the early days made a lot of the great songs in rock music history, and yet remained unamed, and not credited on the recordings certainly belong in this group.

Berry Gordy Jr. limited their career with tight contract restrictions, low pay, and low recognition (not uncommon in the industry, allowing for unsung heroes, moonlighting under different names, and whatnot).

Later The Funk Brothers would get recognition ... but, much of their contributions have slipped through the cracks.

Thanks, to all the unsung heroes.

Note: Having grown up, as a drummer, I listened to all kinds of prominent drum recordings where guitarists (musicians) remained anonymous.

I just found out Richard Podolor of the Renegades was responsible for many of those great guitar backings and superb tones on Sandy Nelson's albums. 'The Casbah, Whittier Blvd., and Drums A Go Go' come to mind.

Can't remember his name, but the guy from Boston didn't seem to get the credit he deserved.

Tom Scholz ... I love the fact that the Fenderfan could not remember his name. Now that is TRULY under-rated when your fans refer to you as "that guy"... Great call, though. He is brilliant, and gets very little props. Those first two Boston albums are amazing.

:P .
Not really flashy. Just a smooth and consistent flow that showcases the song more than his talent.
