I love threads like this, because each answer makes you say, "oh yeah..." Good to see the love for Buck Dharma (great chops and beautifully idiosyncratic phrasing) and Rick Nielsen (the man can write a song and fit in gobs of cool guitar parts). And if you wonder how good Brad Whitford is, search YouTube for vids of him playing (jamming) outside of Aerosmith.

I'll add Rod Price, the late guitarist from Foghat to this list. Absolutely ferocious slide playing (and ferocious non-slide as well) with amazingly clean technique considering the intensity with which he and the band would play. I will also add that current Foghat guitarist Bryan Bassett is a criminally unknown player who deserves far more recognition than being a replacement guy.

Justin Hayward with the “Moody Blues”. I always thought they were laid back until I saw them twice in the 70’s. Hayward could really play. J.R. Cobb with the Atlanta Rhythm Section and Randy California with Spirit. Amazing players.

Ritchie Blackmore.

Awesome guitarist that doesn't get the credit he deserves.
He's very melodic and very inspirational.

Are you serious? Only Hendrix gets more credit than Blackmore, at least from people I've met.

He might mean post-Purple post-Rainbow Blackmore. Most people only associate him with the old heavy rock acts, which is a shame - although those were great, him going off and doing other things as a minstrel has not diminished his talents. It's sad to see how much vitriol he has caught from former fans for going off and doing something different.

(That's the coolest hat ever, by the way. No offense to Slash, but he's got you beat.)

He still has his electric chops too - here's his tribute to Jon Lord (RIP):

Sorry. I guess I wasn't clear with Blackmore. I was referring to his post Purple work.
Thanks arth1.

Two more that fall under the radar.

1. Rory Gallagher. My favorite guitarist. R.I.P.
2. Roy Buchanan. He was a monster. R.I.P.

Lindsey Buckingham. An excellent guitarist with a very distinctive style of playing and, although it isn't a style I would emulate, I respect his abilities.

Great minds think alike! Under-recognized as opposed to under-rated serves a better choice for this thread, given many of the artists offered here.

Two unsung heroes who've worked with notable artists such as Eric Clapton, David Gilmour, and Mark Knopfler are'
Tim Renwick and Phil Palmer.

I am of the opinion that Renwick is the player Clapton referred to in his bio when he wrote that he dropped the idea of second guitarist in his band because he was tired of hearing his solos played back at him. You can see an example of this on YouTube during a performance of 'Cocaine' on a Boston MA tour in the 70's. Renwick also toured with Gilmour. He performs the second solo on one track of The Wall which is just drop dead awesome. Also found on YouTube.

Well...Steve Winwood is so well-known for his amazing voice and even more amazing skills on the B-3, that he is often overlooked as a guitarist. But he can hold his own with the best of them: of course he played great guitar on a lot of the original Traffic stuff, but for more recent work, check out Dear Mr. Fantasy from the 2007 Crossroads festival, and his work on several songs (including DMF again) from the 2009 Clapton / Winwood Madison Square Garden shows.

I saw Winwood this summer on his western US solo tour (before he joined Tom Petty's tour as the opening act) and he was terrific on organ, guitar, and vocals. I think he has an East Coast tour this spring, check it out if you have a chance.

Not sure if he’s been mentioned but I’ll throw Adam Jones of Tool in this thread. Its pretty common to look up to players that are known for their lead work but this guy is just an amazing Rhythm player. I was just listening to Ænima by Tool lastnight and forgot how amazing this record is. I you aren’t familiar with Tool I highly recommend at least checking this album out. Sure it may be on the heavy side for some but the musicianship is excellent. And they put a LOT of care into the recording process so great production as well. One of the best bands to come out of the 90s.

Whilst he could not exactly be called unknown i always think that the late Jeff Healey is massively underrated. Check out his first album "See the Light" for some of the most explosive liquid hot blues playing you'll ever hear. And also remember the guy was totally blind from the age of one so had to learn just by feel, this also accounts for his unorthodox style whereby he'd play with the guitar sitting on his lap using his thumb as one of his fretting fingers. Amazing, totally amazing.

Another player who i always think was massively underrated was blues man Phil Guy. He was always in the shadow of his much more famous older brother Buddy but there is no doubt he was an awesome blues player in his own right. I had the privilege of seeing him play live once many years ago and i have rarely seen a performance like it. It was amazing. It was a tough gig as well, it was a Monday evening in a small pub in Northampton (a boring small town in the midlands in the UK) and i only heard about it because there happened to be about two lines mentioning it in the local newspaper on the actual night of the gig itself, there must have been maybe 60-70 people there (which didn't actually look too bad because it was a pretty small place) but by the end of it there wasn't one single person in the entire place who wasn't dancing. He got that crowd in the palm of his hand and played them like he played his guitar, it was one of the most amazing performances i have ever seen. Deserves way more recognition than he gets.
