Of course!! Uriah Heap!! I had a cousin a few years older than me in high school who introduced me to those four (Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath & Uriah Heap) plus Jimi Hendrix one school holidays (when I was about 15 years old). Those 5 groups/musicians stick in my mind because in a way they were like the soundtrack to those holidays (back before CD's -when my cousin would make tapes from his LP's!) and those holidays were eye openers in more ways than one...I lost my virginity for starters! Plus, I will never forget sitting in his old V8 ute, blasting Deep Purple's "Highway Child" or smoking my first joint to Black Sabbath's "Sweet Leaf"!! Wow,....great memories!!
I remember he had two Uriah Heap LP's. One was very unique -I think it was called "Look At You or Look At Yourself? Not sure, but I remember the record cover was made from some sort of reflective foil so that you could look at yourself on the cover! So cool!
Another one was "Demons and Wizards". I remember those two albums of theirs.
I might see if I can find them on CD.
:D

With Blue Oyster Cult you'll want to start with the first three albums to get their best stuff.

Even though he's considered a Metal guy because of him being in Motley Crue , I've always thought that Mick Mars was one of the most underrated guitarists around. Especially with his medical condition where his bones are more or less fused together but he still goes out there and kicks butt on his Strat with the Crue. This is Motley Crue's final year as a band and Mick has mentioned in interviews where ,he would like to go and do a Blues album when Motley is done. I for one would love to see him go and do that. I think he could pull if off and surprise everybody.

In metal circles, Mick gets no love. He is actually a very tasteful guitar player, with expert trem skills. Good call.

Yes, which -- IMO -- were not recorded very well, unfortunately. So I always listen to their first live effort (On Your Feet Or On Your Knees) which really captures many of their early tunes quite well.

I agree with a lot of the names already posted, but I will add a few:

1. Billy Corgan - he provided plenty of tasty guitar heroics for the Pumpkins in their heyday;
2. Isaiah Mitchell of Earthless - very, very Hendrixy, but with modern sensibilities;
3. Curt Kobain (I'll bet you didn't see that coming :wink: ), based on his expressiveness.

What about Leslie West ? He definitely has his own tone and IMO, doesn't sound like anybody else. I have a few of his albums, " Guitarded , Blues Me , and Got Blooze ". That cat can make his Les Paul Jr. sing like a mutha and his vocals aren't that bad either. I still wish he was playing Gibsons though and not that horrible looking Dean he now endorses.

Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick, changed the lead guitar gig totally, the super-nerdist virtuoso:

Not only is he underrated, Leo Kottke might be the best guitar player nobody ever heard of. He is not in a band. He just comes out and plays. Solo. No vocals. Seriously good acoustic player born in Athens, GA which is where I first saw him play about 1973 in a little theater there during his run recording solo albums for Capitol when Athens was still his home town. His "My Feet Are Smiling" album had just come out.

He's about 69 now and lives in Minneapolis. If you EVER get a chance to see Leo Kottke play, don't pass it up. A rare talent who is so good that like Chet Atkins, he doesn't need a band. Saw Chet also. Preferred Leo because he is more energetic and far less predictable. He's really an amazing player, especially considering the personal issues he's battled like severe tendon issues and partial deafness. Leo Kottke plays Americana and Folk better than anyone I ever saw.

Oh....one more who had a solo career but now is usually seen with a big outfit like the Coral Reefer Band is Mac McAnally from Alabama. Just a solid player who can pick with the best plus can still sing. So there's a couple of underrated guitar players.

I have to disagree with Gary Moore being underrated! Just not as widely known as guys with half his talents. Gary is the definition of a players player and any top player will have nothing but praise for what were Gary's brilliant skills. Kind of like Danny Gatton, where in guitar circles that guys know their $@!& would be mentioned right at the top of the mountain.My dream Blues bill in the 80's when Gary was in his blues phase would of Been SRV and Gary. Both guys who could play blues the way I love it =Scorchingly, as well as a battle of the two most iconic tone machines pre CBS Strat vs 59 Burst! What I wouldn't of paid to see them play a few encores together, call the fire department lol.

I kinda agree with StrayCat on this ... Within guitar-player circles, Gary Moore gets lots of love. There were others mentioned that I also don't think are truly under-rated. Just a thought ...

Brian Setzer.
Famous, yes. Underrated, most definitely. The most underrated, definately not. Try finding him in ANY top 100 guitarist list and you'll see what I mean.

Brian Setzer is pretty damned phenomenal. I've seen some videos of him going into jazz mode and it's really quite something, being a rockabilly dude and all.

Someone mentioned Prince earlier. Sometimes he does some weird $@!&, but most of the time his solos are definitely formidable.

I'd say Don Felder is pretty underrated. Always playing second fiddle to Joe Walsh, while being a far superior string craftsman.
