Someone already posted this but yes Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser is by far one of the best I have seen and not to long ago! Seen Blue Oyster Cult up in la. around 4 months back! Best guitar solo I have seen in years!

I think he gets respect as a songwriter, icon and arranger, but I think too many people have never really paid attention to him as a guitarist.

Donald Roeser “Buck Dharma”, good call.

My mom grew up next door to his family in Commack and used to watch him and his brother when they were very young so I’ve gotten to meet him a few times. Went out to dinner with him before a show at Jannis Landing in Tampa FL and met up with him again outside the Bayfront Center in St. Pete. That was a great time. Saw him outside and even though we had tickets, he just had us go through the band entrance and we got to hang backstage and my friend and I watched the show from near the monitor mixer. By that time it wasn’t the “Party” that it might have been in the 70s but it was nice to have a heiny from the cooler and chat with him and see Foghat as well. Seeing an arena show from the stage perspective was a really neat experience too. Got to see the drumtechs work at warp speed to repair the kick drum while Buck Dharma stalled with Blackbird by the beatles.

Great player and I didn’t expect to get that blown away by his chops.

If I said the name Chris Britton I doubt that anyone would know who I'm talking about, the same goes for Derek Leckenby and Keith Hopwood.Chris Britton was the lead guitarist for The Troggs and it's his percussive strumming and picking style that helped give The Troggs their raw primitive beat when combined with Ronnie Bond's thundering tom tom and bass drum assaults and mighty thumping coming from Pete Staples' bass cabinets. If you listen to songs such as "I Can't Control Myself","Girl In Black","With A Girl Like You" and "I Want You" you can hear his smashing a bashing on the strings, but it's never discordant or off beat,it's always just perfectly adapted to the song.

There are other great guitarists who have largely slipped under the musical radar such as Derek Leckenby and Keith Hopwood of Herman's Hermits.Although as a band they were consider light weights, the tasty guitar work by these two was always understated but it always managed to be a perfect fit for the particular song it was applied to.

Kim Simmonds of Savoy Brown is another master of the 335 who never got the accolades that he earned and deserved. If you're not familiar with Savoy Brown, check out their Raw Sienna album IMHO it's their best album and the one that most demonstrates just how varied Kim's style can be.Last but not least are Andy Powell and Ted Turner of Wishbone Ash,they are certainly among the hierarchy of dual lead guitarists and IMHO they are Wishbone Ash,other guitarists who came later just didn't live up to Powell and Turner and IMHO these guys along with Martin Turner (bass) and Steve Upton (drums) ae the only incarnation of the band that I regard as actually being Wishbone Ash,none of the others can come close to songs like "Blind Eye" ,"Time Was","Jail Bait" and the incredible "Phoenix" which is one of my all time favourite songs.

It would be impossible for me to name just one most under-rated guitarist, because there are so many incredible musicians who have slipped under the radar I couldn't live with myself for not mentioning them....well not quite that bad but you know what I mean...I hope.

+1 on Buckingham. I've seen some live tracks that just blow my mind. I'm a huge fan of delay and I'd say he's second only to David Gilmour in that department.

I think Ian Crichton from Saga is pretty damned underrated. His rather peculiar use of palm muting and pinch harmonics are really pretty different from a lot of the stuff I hear guitar players doing during lead cuts.

Another honorable mention is the guy from Triumph, I forget his name, but he really cranks when he wants to and you don't really hear people talk about that band much, let alone him as a player.

Thanks heaps everybody for the list of artists I've so far made to check out...it's getting pretty long!! Some of the names I've heard of but there's also a lot that I haven't. I sometimes know of the bands they played for too, just not their individual names.
I remember a teacher I had about 10 years ago in Sydney and he was seriously one of the most insanely good players I'd ever witnessed but unfortunately, due to an obvious raging heroin addiction he could never seem to get it together and stay in a band long enough to get anywhere. I often wonder how many other extreme talents get ruined by drug addictions, such a shame. I just knew him as Jimmy and I was never even sure if that was his real name because of his lifestyle but I still often think about him. To this day, I learnt more in the six months I saw him than I probably did for the next few years! He was that good.
Anyway, don't mean to bore you guys to death!
I scored a really cool blues album yesterday by Junior Wells called "Hoodoo Man Blues" from 1965...insane guitar playing man!! So funky!
I've got so many new artists to check out now thanks to you guys!
Cheers!

Junior's guitarist was Buddy Guy. Yep, he's pretty good.

Wow, you're right! :D Thanks! I didn't read the liner notes till now:

Junior Wells: haronica/vocals
Buddy Guy: guitar
Jack Myers: bass
Bill Warren: drums

He is an amazing player. He would've still been fairly young when he did this album too. Unreal. It's as though some players are just great even when they just started!
I'm glad you pointed that out, thanks!
I've got a few of his live performances on a dvd called "Crossroads - Eric Clapton Guitar Festival 2007" - Think I will invest some more time into listening to him now. There's not many of these original blues players left alive anymore unfortunately. I've been following BB King on twitter and have sent him "get well soon" type messages with his recent health scare. At 89 and still touring, he's amazing. Hope he gets well again anyway.
:D

Wow! Even though I couldn't watch the video (I'm using Safari and i kept getting messages about my Flash player needing an update so I did it but it still won't play -sorry!) I looked him up and found out he was the guitar player with Parliament-Funkadelic. I liked the title of one of his albums: "Free Your Mind And Your $@! Will Follow" so thought I'd try and download a torrent version of it to see what it sounds like -don't worry, if I like it I will support them and buy it! Such as shame that he died so young, only 42 years old.
Another person suggested The Troggs and as I know Hendrix covered their hit "Wild Thing" I thought I'd search about them as well. I'm downloading their first two albums: "From Nowhere" & "Wild Thing" (1966).
They had a real knack in the 60's for writing catchy tunes, that's for sure.
:)

Some people also suggested a guy I feel stupid to have not heard before now, Donald Brian Roeser. Although I'd heard the name "Blue Oyster Cult" I had never heard them until today! Thanks so much to you guys who suggested him! I got a copy of "Agents Of Fortune" and love it man. I will look for it on CD and buy it for sure!
:)

Mick Box, guitarist for Uriah Heep. One of the big 4, Uriah Heep, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, from the early 70s. He is still with us but plays mostly UK/Europe gigs. A unique rock guitarist for his time with many killer songs in his catalog.

Mick Box is awesome. I got to say hello to him once back in Old Blighty, and he seems like the least pretentious guy ever, giving off the vibe that people made him genuinely happy just by showing up. 'ery 'umble indeed. I'm not a fan of anyone, really, but if I were to become a fan of someone, I'd shortlist him.
