A perfect example of a guitarist that's not known enough, right? If good enough for Alan Parsons, one of the most picky producers in the world, he's good enough for pretty much anything. And he does also play pretty much anything, including blues, rock, metal, folk, lead and rhythm (and even the sax solo on "Old and Wise"). I think why he isn't more known is a lack of stage presence. Guys like EC, SRV and EVH had that in spades, while many other good guitarists perform better with less limelight.

Who is the most average famous guitarist? Is that what you're asking? Hello, Oxymoron!

Ah, look, I don't know what your problem is buddy but if you don't like the topic for some reason then stop being negative or just go away. If that 30 in your name is your age then start acting like it. It seems to me that you must scroll through the forums looking for a topic you can have a $@!&* about and then away you go! Is that it?
You remarked earlier about comparing people when that has nothing to do with the topic at all. Seeming you lack the intelligence to interpret the question (like everyone else has no problem in doing) I will try to make it simple for you: Who do you think is under-rated? An example: Someone who deserves more recognition than they get.
Get it??
If not, like I said, just go away. Be negative somewhere else.

I'd have to nominate Todd Rundgren.

More recognition? They have to first go way beyond their expected expectations to garner any recognition in my mind. If you give recognition to someone they had to have earned it, not just for existing.

Martin Barre - (over shadowed by the iconic flautist)

Another would be Steve Hillage (of Gong... and tons of independent projects)

Oh, and Adrian Belew.

I feel that Trevor Rabin had some good moments,
but being (unfairly) measured along side Steve Howe, that had to be kinda tough.

I'm a KISS fan so you know I gotta say Ace Frehley is probably the most famous "average" guitar player I can think of.

He never ventured far from the pentatonic riffs, but he used is vibrato well and his licks were tasty but not overdone.

But because he was in the silly makeup band he'll never get much credit from a lot of musicians.

Steve Wariner. Yes, I know he was recognized and given the title CGP (Certified Guitar Player) by none other than than Chet Atkins himself, but most people think of him solely as a singer...most people are wrong.

Willie Nelson. Another very, very famous dude who plays much better than people think. I got to see him play at a show that included a double dozen of guitarists--none were particularly "country"--and he set everybody back on their heels, re-working and improving on their own licks. He went toe-to-toe with Albert Collins, Charlie Sexton and Ian Moore at the end of the evening, and he pretty much mopped up everybody on that abused old Martin catgut acoustic.

Waylon Jennings. While he always had an equally good or even better guitarist in his band, the man was inventive, articulate and could solo like nobody's business--and that's overlooking his amazing rhythm lines.

David Lee Holt. The "other half" of Storyville's guitar duo. From his solo work to holding down the fort in Joe Ely's band to backing a hundred different folks, there's no good reason he's not better known...plus he can sing amazingly well.

You really think Willie Nelson is underrated? I don't think so. I think he gets the respect he deserves.

Lindsey Buckingham. An excellent guitarist with a very distinctive style of playing and, although it isn't a style I would emulate, I respect his abilities.

Izzy Stradlin. Slash and Axl were in the limelight of GnR, but let's face it, all those fancy riffs of Slash wouldn't sound nowhere near as good (in the early days) if it weren't for Izzy. I do not rate him as one of the all time greats, because he isn't, but he is often very overlooked by GnR fans.

John Frusciante is also someone I rate highly, even though most people overlook him, but let's face it, RHCP has some very nicely driven guitar tunes that wouldn't be as good were it not for John.

Last, but not least, a virtuoso. Vlatko Stefanovski. If he were born in the UK or US, he would have been as famous as Steve Vai and the like. The style is not really similar, but just to give you the idea of who he is :)

EDIT: I realize I forgot to include a video of Vlatko :P

+1 on all but Popa Chubby as I'm not familiar with his work here. And other than that exception I think you even got them in the correct order. Charlie Hargrett isn't flashy, but dead on the money number one.
