As I'm always keen to find and hear great music I've never heard before I thought I'd ask some fellow guitarists out there who they would consider has been very under-rated or over looked when it comes to great player or great solo lists. As an example, even though I actually don't even own any of his albums, Prince's solo on "Let's Go Crazy" was one of my earliest memories of hearing a great solo as well as being from someone who you would normally never consider a great guitarist. Another one of my favourites who is not too well known is the late Mick Ronson (played with David Bowie in the Ziggy Stardust period) -his solo on "Moonage Daydream" was just amazing, plus someone who never really plays solos at all (but is an amazing song writer and finger picker) for me is Bob Dylan as he is never mentioned or known for being an out standing player but actually is.
So, who is under-rated in your eyes?
Hopefully I will learn of some new artists to check out from this!
Thanks!

Alex Lifeson. It's not that I think he is a virtuoso because I don't think he is .... but he is a damned fine player. Damned fine. He never gets any notice because Geddy and Neil ARE virtuosos .... of an extravagant order of magnitude. It's hard to be recognised as being really good when you're surrounded by guys who are worlds better than really good.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I've never heard much praise for Robby Krieger, but IMO The Doors would certainly not sound like The Doors with any other guitarist. Versatility, really good at finding the right sound for each song.

Brad Withford also gets too little love.

A few come to mind...
1. Charlie Hargrett - BlackFoot
2. Duane Roland & Dave Hlubeck - Molly Hatchet
3. Huey Thomasson - Outlaws
4. Popa Chubby
5. Manny Charlton - Nazareth

Uli Jon Roth (Scorpions) is seldom mentioned anymore - ballads may be out of fashion, but he's still a great player.
Ian Bairnson (Alan Parsons Project, Pilot) too.
And Buck Dharma (Blue Öyster Cult), who apparently hasn't lost his chops:

Bernie Tormé. Guy's incredible. Instantly recognisable sound, superb vibrato and just a great player. He's not overly technical but the way he makes a Stratocaster growl and scream is just remarkable. I saw him playing with Ian Gillan in 1981 shortly before he got the job standing in for the late Randy Rhoads and I was just blown away. I knew there and then that I was going to work crap jobs, save up for a Strat and a Marchall, practice 12 hours a day and play for the rest of my life. And I did. And Bernie Tormé's sound and feel are still at the back of my mind when I play.

In Popa Chubby's case, I'm not sure if he's under-rated or just unknown. He's big in Europe (well, big everywhere at 300lbs). I love the big guy, and have almost all of his large cataloge. Check out "Rain On My Mind" or "Same Old Blues". I sent him a text once. He was kind enough to answer. Thanks, man.

Charlie Sexton--even if he didn't play guitar, he would be terribly under appreciated. He's a great singer, an excellent songwriter and a brilliant producer. If you add his guitar-playing abilities, he's a dang-near unstoppable force to be reckoned with. His penchant for creating ambient washes and patterns underneath stellar lead lines is an amazing thing to behold. Plus, Lady Armadillo thinks he's "cute." ( )

I think Brad Whitford is criminally overlooked and minimized in his role in Aerosmith. No offense to Mr. Perry (who's no slouch himself), but Brad's the better guitarist.

Austin guitarist/producer Derek O'Brien is horribly overlooked as well. I've seen him stand beside, play with, and out-play many famous legends at Antone's and other venues, but he's always been gracious and humble, never seeking or pushing someone out of the limelight.

Buddy Whittington would be more famous than Eric Clapton if he didn't look like a plumber...

David Grissom should be a huge rock star, but he is (unfortunately) unknown by the general public.

Perfectly put BMW. I think Rush is a bit of an underdog type band in some ways so he’s often overlooked and when they are discussed, its all Neil and Geddy. Him and Gilmour are my two favorites.

Another favorite of mine that may not be underrated but overlooked is Keith Scott the guitarist for Bryan Adams. I love his tone and he’s such a tasteful player. Whatever he plays is just what the song needs and not just there to show off his chops.

Henry Vestine (The Sunflower) December 25, 1944 – October 20, 1997. The lead guitarist for Canned Heat in the late 60s. A pioneer of high volume fuzz tone guitar licks he could buzz with the best. The late Alan Wilson (The Blind Owl) July 4, 1943 – September 3, 1970 from the same band, rhythm guitar slide guitar vocalist and harmonica player, also very under-rated. Lastly, Zal Cleminson lead guitarist for The Sensational Alex Harvey Band is a monster guitarist but under-rated as well.

Compared to what? I'm having trouble understanding the question. Is it comparing under-rated to so called legit or over-rated guitarists. This whole thread seems to be highly subjective in my eyes.

Ian Bairnson (Alan Parsons Project, Pilot) too.
The many times I've listened to APP and never realized Iain Bairnson was the guitarist, actually thought he passed away years ago, someone on some youtube vid I'd watched mentions something, obviously I've went the 2+2 = 3 route (slaps forehead). Back when Pilot were charting I always though he had something that stood out, some of his riffs seemed out of place with the teenybop image, just seemed to me a hard rocker was in there waiting to be unleashed, maybe it was the double neck SG, never gave the band that much attention TBH, giving them a listen to now, an example of the teenybop and rock guitarist - skip to 2-20 Their last album ( just listened to) Morin Heights strays away from their pop chart stuff.

+1 for Zal ( there has to be another note in here and I'm gonna squeeze till I find it) Cleminson.
