What is Fender Japan making these days? I saw the Classic Series Mustang Bass is being made in Japan, any others?

FMIC has cut back the basses that Fender Japan makes that are being sold retail here in the states if that's what you're asking.

The Steve Harris is still being sold. Which I've heard is pretty killer. We lost the 51 Reissue awhile back, and it looks like The Sting Signature Bass just went away. Unfortunate, but not surprising given the way the savages at FMIC crap on the single coil Precision. The Aerodyne J (a great bass if you're into lightweight tone machines and the P/J configuration) is still on the site, but I've heard it is being discontinued, aswell.

However, As was pointed out above. Fender Japan is still churning out tons of killer instruments. You just aren't being allowed to buy them new. Most likely due to some government BS. However, there are always ways to get anything if you're willing to pay the price or deal with things like it being "used" or assembling it yourself from an ebay chopshop.

That being said, The Classic 70's Precision Bass that was being done in Ensenada was a great bass and was a fitting successor to the Fender Japan model. Of course, that looks like it got the axe, too. I think they are still making the Geddy J in Mexico, but you never know now that he's got a Custom Shop Tribute.

Honestly, if there's a model you dig. You might want to jump on it before management cans it and replaces it with some knock off of a Gibson or some other awful sounding hunk of crap.

No, the BS is from manufacturers who engage in regional price fixing. They don't want you to import products from markets where profits are lower.

Yet, as a private person you can, quite legally, buy a Fender guitar from one of the many places that export them, and there's little Fender can do about it. They can refuse to sell instruments to stores that export, but they generally can't prevent other stores from buying them from Fender authorized dealers and then export them.

Depending on which country you buy from, you may even get warranties (in many, if not most countries, warranties transfer with ownership, unlike here in USA). Returning products can be costly, but still cheaper than no coverage at all.

You do realize that this happens because of governmental interference, right? Things like NAFTA that use the violence of government to "price fix" markets. Meaning that without governments suppliers in Japan and Mexico would end up fighting a price war to see who could provide the best quality product at the lowest price. A fight Mexico could not win. At least initially. However, by being given special consideration from the violent monopoly of government which illegitimately claims right to tax and tariff goods brought in an out of a geographic region they are able to give people they choose an edge. The entire economy of every nation on this planet is corrupted by this violence. The "free market" is a myth. So, no. This is most definitely governmental BS.

Fender Japan has the coolest looking instruments around - one retailer told me it was because the Japanese market is more superficial that the US market. Furthermore, the CIJs that I have had, have always been really really solid.

FMIC has stopped selling the CIJ Jaguar Deluxe, I am guessing because it would kill the American Deluxe Jaguar - why spend twice as much for an equal instrument?

The American Jaguar Bass is an American Standard model, not Deluxe.

An American Deluxe Jaguar would have 21 frets, compound radius fretboard, a N3 Jazz Bass pickup in the bridge and an 18V preamp; it would surely kill the Precision which comes with such features, that's why FMIC chose to add the Jag to their American Standard line of bass guitars.

Yep, that was what I was asking. Well, basses and [treble] guitars. I agree with the other posters that there are some really nice Fender Japan guitars out there. I have a Pawn Shop 51 and like it a lot. I was kind of hoping the answer was "yes, the Tele Deluxe is made in Japan"....sounds like it's not.

Oh and sorry about starting that whole NAFTA/import debate, I was more just wondering what was out there.

I don't suppose you have a link or a business name?

Rakuten Ichiban (Japan's counterpart to Amazon) does listings for several sellers:

Thanks,
Oh my but there are some pretty colours on there. I've been saying for some time that Fender USA needs to spice up the colours. Maybe it's time to start looking at Fender Japan...

Dammit! Why did I have to go and look?
Freakin' GAS attacks!

You know?
Maybe it's a good thing Fender seems stuck in the mud with the same old drab colours that haven't changed in 50 or 60 years .... Black, Olympic White and 3 Tone Bursts. If these guitars were available in MIA I'm not so sure I would have such good control over my GAS.
