A simple question - how many times in the last 12 months has GAS sneaked up behind your back and made you purchase something you suddenly not just wanted but needed so desperately?

1. I bought about 200€ worth of guitar accessories (strings, cleaners, an expression pedal for the Mustang amp I owned,..) in October, 2013. (although, to be fair, it was supposed to be a self-B-day present and once my folks heard of it, they said they'd take care of the payment instead of going shopping for a Bday present for me :D T'was definitely the best kind of gift :D )
2. In December I sold the Mustang and bought a used SuperSonic 60 tube amp, 900€.
3. As I had no need for a foot tuner or a Wah, those were also my purchases in December, because I needed them "badly". Another 200€ (well, 220 counting the patch cables and power adapter).
4. Come February, I craved for a delay. Here comes the T-Rex Duck Tail delay which cost me another 180€.
5. In April, I needed a power supply station and a couple cables, another 130€.
6. In July, I wanted an overdrive unit (and what got me GASsing for one was the presentation of the Deluxe Big Muff Pi by EHX, but it wasn't available yet). T-Rex Alberta II, hello! 170€ goodbye. Turns out it was a very smart purchase, because I'd be left with no overdrive when I had to play on a different amp on a gig when my amp didn't want to produce any sound while we were powering up.
7. September - Deluxe Big Muff Pi which was finally out, I got it less than 5 days ago. That and some strings and a couple of patch cables, another 150€.

(8.) 5 days after my latest purchase, I've already got a shopping basket full at Thomann for 400€. I saw Harley Benton makes those DIY guitar kits, which are very cheap, and I decided I'd build a guitar out of that kit, a SG. I figured the pickups must be bad in that kit, so I added a Gibson '57 Classic Vintage Pickup for Neck position, and a Gibson '57 Classic Plus Pickup. Which means 190€. I do intend for the kit to be a kickass guitar once it's built, with a killer tone, so hence the reason for better pickups, some shielding, bone nut, better looking pot knobs, etc. So from 77€ that the kit costs, I went to 340€ with various upgrades (the other 60€ are tubes, pedal board tape and some strings). Like I said, once the guitar is finished, I do expect it to sound like a guitar that costs around 1k €. I will wait with this purchase at least a month or so, though :P And once I told my GF of it, she asked me if I want her to give me some money to help finance the purchase as my birthday gift, as I'll be 21 in a couple of weeks and she doesn't know what to get me, so there's that at least  Perhaps my folks will chip in too
But still. I hate GAS :( I am just a student and if I hadn't had scholarship and hadn't earned some money in a part time job, there's no way I could have afforded any of it. Not including the current basket at Thomann, I've spent almost 2k € in the past 12 months. This is also not including my latest purchase, a '93 DRRI, but that is covered with the money I am getting from the sale of the SuperSonic.

The light at the end of the tunnel, though, which will satisfy both my GAS, will serve as a hobby and possibly I will also make some money off of it is the solution that if the DIY guitar sounds and plays as killer as I think it will, I will purchase other similar kits, assemble them (with upgraded stuff of course, to make those sound killer as well), and sell them.

Please tell me GAS has been hard on you too in the last 12 months :P

About 9 months ago a Gibson Les Paul Special jumped right off hanger at GC and right into my hands. I love the P90s and the deep cherry stain is beautiful!

About 6 months or so I finally found the '66 Bassman head to match my 2x12 '66 cab, it needed a bit of refurbing to get it back to factory spec but was well worth it. My Strats and especially the Les Paul Special rip nicely through it!

For me GAS never leaves, it just subsides a little, once in a while. I pretty much go from one need to the next.
The one thing I can say is that I pretty much put everything I buy to use, or I get rid of it. Case in point:
I have a pretty nice pedal board and I'm thinking of dismantling and selling it all and replacing it with a Fractal Audio FX and their midi controller. It's going to be an expensive transition but I'm more into working with presets than stomping on a bunch of pedals and having to twist knobs between songs. I usually use two presets per song, doing that with individual pedals is too much dancing.
So, the GAS goes on.

I'm with Drew. GAS is a condition I live with daily. Over time you learn to control your urges but the need is with you always. I don't think I go a single day without feeling some kind of impulse. I've pretty much got my guitar GAS under control. It was rampant for a few years and things got ugly (or beautiful in some people's eyes) but I cowboyed up and took the bull by the horns and culled my inventory of non-essential guitars and amps. Sometimes the choices were tough, I freely admit it but I have very few regrets. Just one very special Tele I regret selling and my SFVR. Not really sure why I sold that.

For me amp GAS is harder to control than guitar GAS. Amps are so much more interesting to me. They're like pickups only a hundred times better.

And on that subject ..... the last band I was in is talking about getting back together some time this winter and they say they'll want me on guitar this time rather than bass and now I've got this serious jones for a Boogie MkV head and a split back 412 just thinking about the new project. It's been eating at me for a couple of weeks ever since they approached me about it. A purchase like that will take a lot of effort justifying.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Another 'daily' here. I have Jaguar GAS and Jaguarillo GAS and 100 watt all-tube half stack GAS, but due to the expense of said items, I'm holding them at bay...at least for the moment.

However, my pedal GAS is getting the best of me. I've bought 4 pedals in the last 3 months, and it's all I can do not to surf over to an online retailer right now and buy that Dunlop Jimi Hendrix Mini Fuzz Face that I'm GASing for, or the red germanium Mini Fuzz Face, or the GFS Brownie, which is a Rat clone at half the price, or Vick Audio '73 Ram's Head clone of the famous Ram's Head Big Muff Pi, and a MXR Phase 90 would be nice, and a Black Arts Toneworks Black Forest OD is to die for... Seriously, my impulse control for pedals seems to be spiraling the drain.

The MkV was very high on my list when I was looking for an amp. The King Snake, that ZZDoc was lucky to get, should be a consideration also. I'm not helping the gas am I? :D

Stratman, it seems the GAS doesn't sneak up as often on you as me, but when it does, it sets you back a lot more

Drew - I agree, I also use everything I buy. Although I do use some stuff more than others. I don't know why, but somehow I can't play 2 guitars at once, sadly :( I am not skilled enough :(

BMW - how many guitars did you own? Luckily the amp GAS hasn't got to me. I mean, I did usually buy a better amp every 2 years or so, but I always sold the old one to help fund the new amp, and well, you can't always play on a Frontman 212R :P The Mustang was nice, but the Supersonic was way better.. until it started giving me troubles, but I think the DRRI I own now will stick by me and I won't have to look for others. Although, a vintage Hiwatt would be nice

Pedals have been my nemesis lately as well, spacewolf. Guitars would probably have been my nemesis more than anything else, but I don't have enough money for that sort of thing :P
I know I want a TS-9 soon and I'll also try to score a Boss CE-2 on Ebay, as soon as I get money on paypal (although that will take a while, since I can't transfer it from my bank as my country doesn't allow that, I rely on resources sales from online games to fund such stuff, and that usually takes a while ). After reading gilmourish.com, I also started GASsing a bit for some sort of flanger to get that creamy sound of Comfortably Numb solos. Deluxe Big Muff Pi + the Duck Tail delay get me close, but there's "just one thing left missing", as all of us guitarists like to say often

Actually I have GAS all the time, it's just that I have been collecting for so long that I have most of what I GAS for...except that Tweed Hardvard I let get away and a Natural color Explorer, oh and that Martin M36 acoustic...you get the idea!

Pedals have been my nemesis lately

13 electrics, 3 acoustics, 3 basses = 19
10 amps

I realise a lot of folks prolly think that's a modest collection but to me it was excessive. When I decided to cull, my original intent was to go down to 1 of each basic type but it didn't work out that way. I ended up keeping 2 Strats and 2 acoustics rather than 1 of each. My reason for 2 acoustics was 1 nice one and 1 campfire one. My reason for 2 Strats was 1 HSS and 1 SSS.

I reduced to 6 amps and 7 guitars but it's been slowly creeping up again.

I buy about a half dozen pedals a year or so on average. I don't care for trying them in the store because I can't use them with my amps and my guitars and in combination with my other pedals. I bring them home and spend some quality time with them before I decide if they are a keeper or not. Sometimes new. Sometimes used. I prolly toss $300 or $400 in the toilet each year losing money on a pedal fetish but I feel I gain valuable insight and I'm getting closer to my holy grail pedal board all the time. I think I'm really close now. Until the next great thing comes along LOL.

GAS... not a day goes by... that... I don't get the urge to get something.
I've found the ONLY way to control it is to NOT act on the impulse (very hard to do).
If over a period of time... say a couple of weeks... I'm still seriously considering the purchase... I'll make the move to go for it.

I GAS all the time, but I have enough self control to wait until I can figure out if it's a minor attack or a full-blown-acute-Gear Acquisition Symdrome episode.

I might see something I like or have a passing fancy for, and if it's a readily available item or the price is more than I'm willing to (mentally, financially, maritally) justify, I'll wait.

Case in point: I really, really, really want a Fender Bass VI and one of those Fender Thinline Deluxe Telecasters with the two P90 pickups. I would like a smaller, lighter amp (Princeton, perhaps) as well...and if I get the Bass VI, I really need a bass amp.

However, I've been in a financial bind for almost two years, so my common sense has overridden my desire for these instruments.

I'll just keep GASsing until I can justify the expense for something I WANT but don't actually NEED.

Dang common sense. :?

My mate works at the best local shop which means I get discount. Add that to 0% finance and the abundance of great kit in the shop, I Dare not go see him too often.

Last week I spoke to a member of my old band from about ten years ago. He mentioned in passing/jest having a jam, and within an hour I was scouring my mates shop for a new gig sized amp that I have almost no use for.

But those orange combo amps looks so tempting.......

I had to have the Squier Bass VI despite the 4 month wait. Then there was the ehx Satisfaction fuzz. Finally, I picked up an ehx Soul Food overdrive pedal.

I still have an electric 12-string on my GAS list. And a Nano Big Muff. Volume pedal. Shimmer pedal. Need a new tube amp, too -- Blues Jr., Vox AC15, or a small Marshall. A Wilson Effects Stoned Grasshopper, preferably one with the old finish.

I'm still renovating the condo and I need to buy new furniture so I'm grabbing bits of gear when I can.

At age 65, I have finally faced my GAS and won! I hit the point where I had 70 guitars, give or take one or two... and 45 guitar amps, give or take one or two... and four complete PA systems of various sizes and I finally realized that enough was enough. I have bought only one guitar in the last 19 months and no amps.

I even sold a guitar the other day, my near-mint Teisco Kingston from the mid 60s and I have a feeling that slowly, but surely, that guitar will be the first of many.

Downsizing, it hits everyone sooner or later. :?
