Does anyone know a simple test to determine if an input is balanced or just TS? It's not in the manual, it just says "Line Level input" the output is listed as balanced. This is for the line level inputs on the back of a UX2. Is there a simple method using a cable and a multi-meter or similar? I know I can just use either cable, but I would really like to know.

You should be able to tell just by very slowly plugging a cord into the jack and counting the detents.

If that didn't work I think I would use a flashlight and look into the jack first.

Then, if I couldn't see well enough I would search online for a user manual to see if that could tell me in the specs section.

Failing that I would open the unit and look.

It plugs in like a TRS but I'm not sure how it's wired. I think I have a plan. If I connect a TRS plug then with the other end test by making contact with the tip and sleeve, then the ring and sleeve I should get the same input if it's balanced. If it's just TS one of those (probably ring and sleeve) should just ground. Does this sound correct?

Or if it is balanced shouldn't I get a signal on the first detent? Half the signal.

I don't know how those pods are wired but I don't think there's any guarantee you're going to see continuity going that route and there's a slight possibility you could do damage. A continuity tester feeds a little current throughout the probes. I have to imagine that current is stronger than a guitar signal but I don't know for sure. You should prolly hold off on that action until somebody with more knowledge of testers chimes in. I think I would just pull the cover and look if it was me.

Thanks, but everything I can find in those manuals just says "line input for line level devices".

I have searched high and low through the entrails of the internet to no avail.

Oh, I was talking about sending a line level signal through for testing not using a continuity tester. I should have stated that. Although, I not sure an Ohms tester would be dangerous to any line level input test, as I have used them on pretty delicate circuits and they are commonly used on motherboards.

Send it a known balanced and a known unbalanced signal. The balanced signal should be 6dB louder if the input is balanced.

OK thanks, sounds simple enough (famous last words). I will use the same material (level) and send it both ways. Should be able to measure a 6 db difference if it's there.

Line 1/L and 2/R on the back of an UX2 are unbalanced. They will except TS or TRS but the signal input is unbalanced. Sent a balanced signal with TRS and an unbalanced signal with TS from a source that will send either, no difference in db. Thanks!

Just realised, the easy way would be to plug in a stereo to two mono Y-lead and see if there's a signal on both mono plugs. If it's balanced you'd get the + signal on one and the - signal on the other.

Yes, this is kinda what I was trying to sort out in the above post. You put it into a practical application. I did this test as well just for fun, and got the same result. Thanks.
