This morning was the start of my wife's first day of retirement and she did what she had planned to do for years. When the alarm went off at 7:30,she picked it up and pitched it out of the bedroom window.I was already up and was hoping to catch the moment on video but she went ahead with it without warning.Just as I'm about to get my new music room up and running she retires and now will be home all day,it's not that I don't want her home but when she's around,I know I won't be able to appreciate my old Marshalls at full volume.I'm going to have to find her a hobby that would get her out of the house for a few hours every day-I wonder if she's too old to be a candy striper at one of our hospitals,

My wife is retired. That's part reason why I don't retire. I have my Egnator and pedal board set up at my office and move some dust in the evenings before heading home. At home I'm relegated to my multi FX pedal into a practice amp and headphones. My advice, build a woodshed and run some power to it.

Some ideas that may intrigue the Mrs.

Crafting. Pottery is an excellent choice but the problem with that one is that if she really, really gets into it she might want to buy her own equipment and start doing it at home. The equipment is pricey, too. Try to find some sort of crafting that requires her to be away from home.

Adult Education. Lots of retired ladies love the idea of going back to high school or a community college to take a course on something they were always interested in but never had the time for.

Volunteer work. Maybe the Mrs. is a devout Christian lady? Maybe she would like to volunteer at a hot lunch program. Don't send her to volunteer at a nursing home though. You don't want her looking at those folks and starting to worry about her future. She'll just bring that worry home with her. That's a job better suited for younger people.

Mild duty Fitness. It's amazing how many retired women are getting into yoga and stretch or cycle classes. Even walking. If she's in good enough shape she will gradually increase her daily mileage and could be gone an hour a day in no time.

It's still a little early yet to be shoving her out the door. She's gonna need a few weeks to get bored first. In the meantime, if she has lunch or coffee once a week with her her former coworkers it can remind her of how empty the rest of her days have become now that she no longer has that social setting in her life 8 hours a day.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Derek, bring your gear over to my place. You can piss off the neighbours there all day and of course I'll have the benefit of pissing them off for the rest of the night.

And congrats to the missus!

If you drive the UHAUL, we can add drums to piss off the neighbors even more.

She knows you play, and loud sometimes. This shouldn't be any different from before.
My guess is that when you've picked up the guitar on weekends, and if it was too loud for her, she left and found something to do.

That said, this is a good opportunity to get two pairs of good headphones - open-back for you, so you can still hear her, and closed-back for her, so she can't hear you.
