I ordered this baby a week ago. It finally came. Too bad I only had like 10 minutes to play with it before I had to go, but man, it sounds AWESOME. This is my first Big Muff, so I can't really compare it to any other. But for under 100€, it's an awesome pedal. It's the one with the Middle Boost.

I will make a sound clip, possibly upload it on YT when I come home tomorrow (as there are no unofficial clips on YT featuring the pedal), but for now I will leave you with a quote of Kit Rae and a pretty picture:

Quote:
...It only took 20 or 30 minutes of playing for me to get a good grasp of the controls, and to realize EHX had built the most versatile BMP ever made...

Right now I'm just so depressed I can't be playing it, it's almost pathetic how I feel  I haven't been able to sleep well the past couple of days because of it and today won't be any different, in fact, it may even be worse, knowing I've had only a short taste of the sweetness

Does look interesting... like the "Mid-Boost" feature... nice for Single Coil pups :)
How is it in regards to noise?
My experience w/ the mighty "Muff" pedal... unusable in positions 1, 3 & 5. Only usable on the "Quack" settings... on a straight Single Coil it was howl, screech and space bug noise city when you stopped playing.
Does this one handle Single Coils w/ less noise?

It does have a noise gate, so you can easily cut the noise completely (granted, the notes sustaining will then be cut at some point - but it takes quite a while to get there, if you aren't too gentle with the strings and if the guitar has a good natural sustain - they won't ring out), but the noise wasn't too excessive (without noise gate) with the sustain turned all the way up. I didn't plug in my Strat yet, though, this was done with a Gibson LP with Burstbucker Pro humbuckers.
I only had 10 minutes to play with it, but I will try it out with my Strat tomorrow too and let you know how it goes :) I don't think the noise will be too loud, even with the Strat, though :)

That's a very good choice for a distortion pedal and if I were in the market for one,it would be my first choice.I've had my old ram's head Big Muff Pi since the early '70s without a minute's trouble,EHX pedals are bulletproof.Enjoy your pedal,I know that it will sound great and you'll certainly have it for a very long time.Congrats.

Thanks mate :) So far, I am loving it. Just a couple more pedals and my pedal board will be complete

I wanted to make a short demo of the pedal, but I could only record it via my laptop's mic and, honestly, it doesn't do justice to the sound coming out of the amp. But I was finally able to toy around with it a bit, so I can answer any questions you might have :)

Strat-Slinger - I played a good couple of hours today, mostly with my Strat plugged in. The noise level, I must say, is very small. Higher than with my Gibson LP with 'buckers (as it's expected), but even without Noise gate turned completely off, it's very, very tolerable. I don't have sustain all the way up though (I have it at around 2 o' clock), with sustain all the way up, on a Strat, you should be using a built-in noise gate. On a guitar with humbuckers, you don't have to use the built-in noise gate with the sustain all the way up (if the guitar and pickups are of decent quality). I wasn't pushing my amp too high, and didn't have to put the volume knob on the Muff above 10 o' clock. But even with the Sustain turned all the way up and on the Strat, it doesn't screech. I didn't try putting volume, tone and sustain all the way up, will do that tomorrow if you want and let you know whether it screeches then.
But yes, it handles single coils with much less noise to what you described, all PUP positions are usable and sound good :) And, like I said, you can always use the built-in noise gate to get rid of the noise completely, if you don't need notes/chords sustaining for more than a couple of seconds (if you do, then using a noise gate is, obviously, not too good, because it will cut the sound once it falls below a certain threshold and thus the notes/chords won't ring out naturally, but will be interrupted). Although, as you know, the noise will depend on several factors as well.. Cables, power supply, whether the pedal has an isolated power supply, etc. I didn't hook it on a completely isolated section of my power supply, so perhaps the noise level could have been even smaller if I put it on a completely isolated section of the power supply.

The Mid-Boost is awesome, you can use it to cut through the mix, if you aren't getting through, or simply as a volume boost (even though it only boosts - or cuts, you can also set it to cut - frequencies, which you also set, in middle range, it sounds as if the volume was boosted), or to have a bit different lead sound for some stuff and use, for instance, muff without mid boost for rhythm, if you're into heavier stuff.

If you are in the market for a Muff, I can only recommend this one :) As I said, I didn't own others before, but I've watched a lot of videos and read a lot about the different ones before I decided for this one.

Enjoy . . . when you can!

I'm going small. Next pedal on my list is the Nano Big Muff.

I had a big muff and loved it, until I tried an English muff'n. That was the sound I was after so I swapped them over. The only downside is when you're trying to beat a hasty retreat from a gig after completely showing up the rather unhappy headline act, you can't just chuck it in your bag because the valve is a bit fragile haha

Steve - I have a pretty big pedal board, in terms of size (80x40 cm + an uplifted part above my power supply), and there's still room for at least 6 pedals (currently got 5 + power supply), so I don't have to be too economical with space :P

Strat-Slinger, it really is :) I tried it out with full volume (of the pedal) and it did start screeching, but only when the volume was above about 3 o'clock with my Gibson. I reckon it would have started at around 1-2 o'clock with my Strat, but honestly, there's such a huge volume increase between the pedal off and on with volume set even at 12 o'clock that I really can't see anyone needing it at, say, 3 o'clock. My Deluxe Reverb was set at a bit over 2 (volume), and I didn't dare plucking a chord with volume of the Muff at those settings, because it was just too loud :)

moochy - I am listening to it now and it sounds good. Luckily, I THINK I don't need any more OD sort of pedals (except for Tube Screamer, don't need it, but want it  ), otherwise I could maybe see myself GASsing for the Muff'n  I bought T-Rex's Alberta II 2 months ago, which has 2 switchable overdrives in 1 unit and I use it for a softer OD and a bluesy, Tube-Screamer like OD. So I think that and the Muff (although I do plan on buying a TS soon, the damn GAS) is more than enough. The Muff'n's pro, it having tubes, is also a con, like you mentioned :P If you get a chance, do try out the Deluxe BM Pi, though. The Middle Boost makes wonders, especially in the more-distorted Muff tones :)

So I was finally able to put the pedal through it's paces in a band setting on Saturday. I must say I was pleasantly surprised :D I did have to increase the volume of the pedal, but I expected that anyway. At around 11-12 o'clock, it sat very nicely in the mix without the mids turned on, while it cut through really nicely with the mids turned on for solos and stuff. Can't wait to try it out on a gig :) But so far, it gets 10/10 :)
