Back in the early '80s I bought a new case for my new Yamaha acoustic and when I opened the case for the first time I was struck with a delicious chocolaty smell,a girl I used to gig with also bought the same kind of case and hers had the same chocolate scent,it lasted for several years.

This past winter I had all my guitars stored in the old music room and the gear was packed in so tight, that there wasn't any room for the dehumidifier. When I moved everything out this spring, after about 3 months,I saw the telltale black stains of mould and mildew on the baseboards and consequently it had gotten on some of the cases. I'm lucky that I bought good case instead of gig bags because the guitars weren't hurt but now I have a few guitars that smell like a very ripe gym bag left in a hot locker all summer long.

Picked up a small mixer today and the first thing I did was smell it. I think I'm scared of the new equipment death smell now. Good news though, the mixer smells very nice. I am going to look like a crazy person when shopping now, as I wonder through the music shop smelling gear.

When I found the case for my Musicmaster many years ago, it was in the back corner of the basement of the music store, dusty, musty, nasty looking and the couple old cigarette butts in it didn't help it's aroma overall. The most appealing part of the transaction was the guy sold it to me for $20 if I was willing to take it.

I used a spray on carpet cleaner on the fabric lining and scrubbed it a little, this after some time with a vacuum cleaner. Then I put some dryer sheets in and left it closed, periodically putting it out in the sun when it was a nice day. Has been good ever since.

What got rid of much of the stench from my G&G case was a liberal sprinkling of baking soda, leave it overnight, followed by a Dyson.
I'd never use fabric sheets - not only because that's just adding another smell, but because who knows how the chemicals in the dryer sheets react to nitro finishes and old school electronics. If they can soften clothes, what will they do to wire sleeves or capacitors?

Every time I read this thread I have visions of Lisa Kudrow strumming an acoustic guitar singing "Smelly gear, smelly gear. Why are they selling you? Smelly gear, smelly gear. It's not your fault!"

And it smells like road-kill. I think it may be in the paint they used. No joke though, it really smells like a dead animal. When I first got it I thought a mouse had died under the house or in a wall until I realized it was this controller. It's not as strong as it was when I first got it so hopefully it will continue to get better. Have any of you ever had smelly equipment that was new?

I recommend putting a clothespin on your nose or maybe a set of nose plugs if you have a really delicate shnozzer.
