I picked up new, one of these:

And it smells like road-kill. I think it may be in the paint they used. No joke though, it really smells like a dead animal. When I first got it I thought a mouse had died under the house or in a wall until I realized it was this controller. It's not as strong as it was when I first got it so hopefully it will continue to get better. Have any of you ever had smelly equipment that was new?

The last Fender guitar I bought, a Telecaster Select HH, smelled like a red light district. The G&G case had been liberally doused with cheap hooker perfume at the factory, and it took weeks of having the guitar out of the case before I stopped gagging when picking up the guitar.
I can only presume that enough people actually like that cloying synthetic odor, since both women of negotiable virtue and Fender continue to use it liberally.

In a case, the offensive odor is formaldehyde, and adhesives.

Matt, I have not. The used gear that I have had did not smell either at least not that I noticed.

Place a scented fabric dryer sheet in the case.
That should cover the foul odor.

Yes, I own an Epiphone SG 310 made in China, and after I got a case for it I noticed a very strong toxic smell when I open the case. I assume it is either the plywood glue or the finish over the paint or both, just can't tell what they stir together over there, as there are no regulations.
I air it out a little before I play, I use it for slide and alternate tuning as it is a long processes to get my AM Strat re tuned with its floating bridge
mud

No, it's often perfume. G+G sprays the cases with perfume, much like some car dealers spray the inside of cars with "new car scent".

(And can you please stop changing your signature pictures so often? About half the adblock rules I have for fender.com are for your pictures. I don't want to see signature pictures, and you're the only one who makes it difficult to block them by changing them more often than others change their underwear.)

Adding more scent doesn't remove the scent. You just make one smell overwhelm another.

It's like adding copious amounts of deodorant instead of showering.

Hmmm... I've owned plenty of Fender G&G cases and I don't recall them smelling like cheap perfume. Weird.

G&G does not spray perfume into their cases. Why would they? Perhaps some chick working at the music store spilled some cologne into an open case? Or even a customer for that matter. Might have sprayed the case thinking her boyfriend was going to get the guitar and he never did. I can think of several ways for it to happen but being scented on purpose by G&G isn't one of them.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

According to Mike Jones who works for Carvin, they do indeed.

And my guitar did not come from a floor but was a special order. It was in a still sealed Fender outer box when I got it.

Why? Because consumers associate smelly with new, I guess? Or to cover up the smell of glue?
In any case (pun not intended), it's not appreciated by everyone, and especially not those of us with perfume allergies.

Maybe I'm just desensitized to the smell of cheap perfume?
