I put my custom shop Clapton up for sale. It will be the first guitar I've ever sold except for a bass many years ago. I love everything about it except for playing it. I've never bonded with the neck or vintage frets. Even my wife told me not to sell it. But, I don't like the idea of it sitting in a closet not getting played. It's a beautiful guitar and deserves better than that. Anyway, I just wanted to commiserate.

Before anyone says it, I know I'm not supposed to sell here. That's why I didn't add a link. I think it's okay to talk about selling and how depressing that can be. I picked a hell of a day to give up sniffing glue!!!

Well, I already built a Warmouth parts caster to replace the Clapton. Their version of Daphne Blue is more turquois, but I can live with it. I love the neck, (round '59, compound radius) and the Fat 50's, and the SS frets. I used it at rehearsal last night and it sounded great.
I'm thinking of using the money from the Clapton to buy a Fractal Audio FX-II XL and possibly a midi control board. Now that won't sit in the closet.
Here's a buddy picture:

If you don't bond with it there's no point in keeping it. I have sold many otherwise fabulous guitars for that very reason and kept a few that were not so fabulous because I did bond with them. The most recent example was when I sold two Gibson LPs a few years apart but kept an Epi LP because I liked it better than the other two put together. Previously I sold a QMT AD Strat and kept the Korean Koa Strat you see pictured in my tag line. Those are the exceptions to the rule. In my experience usually (9 times out of 10) a pricier guitar feels and plays like a better guitar, frequently for good reason, sometimes for reasons you can't quite put your finger on but there are exceptions to the rule. Not usually but it does happen. If it's happened for you then the best thing to do is cut it loose, take your losses, move on and don't look back.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I also think you're on the right track

I once had a Custom Shop 57 Time Machine Strat (blonde finish).

It sounded tremendous, it was beautiful, the action with the vintage frets was great, but it just wasn't for me so it didn't get a lot of use.

Eventually decided it had to go, so it was traded for another Les Paul stnd with the store I bought the Strat from (EM Shorts), I've never looked back with any regrets. That Paul gets tons of use.

I agree - if you don't play it, sell it to someone else who will.
Just don't sell it to someone else who'll keep it boxed up - then you might as well keep it yourself.

Drew I sold mine also. I liked it but I refused to play it out so I just felt it sitting in a case not being played is not worth it. You won't have any problem selling it.

Thanks for that. I would actually have no problem playing out with it if it was one of my favorites. It just never happened. Too much competition and I've found I'm not a vintage kind of guy.

Even though it's a painful decision,it is the best one,As much as you like the guitar,I'm sure that there will be someone who likes it just as much or more and will get years of satisfaction from playing it-after all that's what it was made for.

BTW: Is that birds eye maple I see on the neck of your partscaster? My eyes aren't the best these days but I thought I saw birds eyes-unless I'm having another one of my flashbacks.

If not happy with it why not!

Well Derek, I can't guarantee you aren't having a flashback, :D , but I can verify that there's a sprinkling of birdseye in my partscaster neck. Just enough to make it interesting and compliment the pickguard. Which I might point out is my mod where I wired up one volume, one tone and tucked the 5 way in between them. It's something I had in the back of my head for a long time and finally got it done. It's working for me.

See,I told you my eyesight was getting poor,I didn't notice the control mods you made. That's a pretty novel idea and a handy alteration.
