I think that many people see it as U2 falling rapidly, giving their new album away free and all. However -- what's in it for them is 100 million dollars from Apple. Unbelievable!

I pretty much stopped listening to U2 after Rattle and Hum. This kind of stunt doesn't make me look forward to seeing their influence in FMIC. Though FMIC is basically CBS now, anyhow. So it really doesn't matter, I suppose.

I guess a lot of folks are upset that the new U2 album finds its way into their iTunes and/or onto their device without their knowledge. Apparently this happens because people don't take the time to look at their own settings. The album will be automatically uploaded to your device if in Settings/iTunes & App Store/Automatic Downloads, you've got Music turned on.

FYI

It wasn't on my devices or in my iTunes but I saw some of the hullabaloo that was happening on facebook about the issue so I checked it out and since it was a free album I decided to download it on purpose. I gave it a listen. It's not bad. I wouldn't say it's ground-breaking but it's decent .. if you already like U2.

I hate IOS7 fully and completely so I see no reason to even look at IOS8. I have 7 on my iPad only because some apps I run require it. It's brutal. I hate it. It has built in settings that cannot be changed and that infuriates me. My iPhone still has 6 on it and I hope to God no harm comes to that device because anything I get as a replacement will see the best IOS ever made disappear from my life.

I've a feeling that people who are acting all annoyed at being given some music for free are people who have never once in their entire lives had something real to worry about.

I'm not much into U2 so haven't listened to the album in question yet. It's there if I want to; if not I don't seem to have suffered in the slightest by being given it.

Cheers - C

I don't have the iCloud on my itunes so I didn't get it. If I had gotten it I would have checked it out. That being said, that doesn't change the fact that this is a stunt. Which if Bono and Edge are cool with doing stunts with Apple in regard to their own music. I'm sure they'll feel even more comfortable doing it with product that has someone else's name on it.

Stunt or no stunt, U2 made their money upfront and now they don't have to worry about illegal downloads and such. After all, isn't all the "real" money being made in touring nowadays?

I am proud to own absolutely no Apple products. I don't have iTunes installed, I don't have Quicktime installed. The entire corporation has never received any money from me and they never will.

What selling of music isn't some sort of stunt? It's marketing. No matter how you feel about either party, they do it a hell of a lot better than most.

U2 could have just sold their record and probably made more money from it. But they don't really need any more. What they want is to reach more people than they ever have before. The marketing of U2 is worth more to them these days.

I much preferred their music when it was young and angry and maturing. Now it's matured, it's kind of bland.

When it comes to me, I find this to be true with almost all music. I start listening to groups/artists when they are young and the music is still a little rough and love them, then they become successful and the music loses its edge. My Zune is full of music from groups/artists in their early days and not so much from when they were successful.

There are a few bands that fall into a specific category for me.

They are bands in which I absolutely LOVE half their music and absolutely DETEST the other half of their music. Bands in this category:

REM
U2
Elvis Presley
B52's
The Beatles (yes, THOSE Beatles)
Rush

Because of this weird phenomenon, I can't truly say I love any of those bands whole-heartedly. All of them are amazingly deep in talent on one level or another.

Do any of y'all have similar feelings about a band?

Radiohead. Once they ditched guitars and songs and went for 'sonic palettes' they turned into pretentious wankers. OK Computer and Bends are still two of my best albums of the last 20 years.

I feel that way about a lot of bands. There are very few bands that I love their entire catalogue. Unless they are bands that didn't last long. Like The Clash, ect. I guess it is better to burn out then to fade away.

I’m totally with you on this. There are some moments on Kid A that I love but for the most part it just gives me flashbacks of when I was an assistant sound editor and had to go to the edit room of some independent film in NYC and spend the ENTIRE night pulling audio OMFs because they editorial department was too incompetent to ensure we got everything we needed. That was the only CD in the room and since I hadn’t heard it before, gave it a few spins to keep from falling asleep. Baked that right into my brain with that memory. Now when I hear it I get like that old man on ‘A Clockwork Orange’ when he hears Alex singing ‘Singing in the Rain’ in the bathtub.

For me…

Pearl Jam

I loved their first album when it came out but I just thought Eddie Vedder got way into his own image and I didn’t care for the direction they went in. I suppose you can’t just rewrite your debut album over and over though.

An U2… wasn’t into them after Rattle and Hum. Buddy dragged me to one of their mid 90’s shows where Bono stepped out of a giant glittering Lemon. I just didn’t enjoy that concert and that was the end of the U2 road for me.

I'm exactly the same. The Unforgettable Fire and The Joshua Tree rank among my favorite albums of all time. I'm a huge lover of their early work. However, after Rattle and Hum I just lost a connection with the band. I can't pinpoint it to a specific event like you can, but I know that Atchung Baby did nothing for me. I think there were maybe two songs I really dug off that album and I never listen to it. I never bought another U2 record after that. However, I still listen to their early work often.
