I was wondering if there are special strings that can stretch a little bit so you could tune up more than a semi-tone. I know having a floating bridge would help.

Just about any extra or super light string sets should withstand being tuned a full tone above standard tuning.Any set from .009 - .042 down to .007 - .038 would most likely do the trick.Wouldn't using a capo make it much easier?

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Capos are great for occasional use, but I wouldn't recommend them long term. i can't think of anything that creates as much fret wear as a capo.
(Strange that there aren't any fret protectors you can slide or move onto the fret, fretboard or strings when using a capo, whether hard or soft, round or angular, with or without a flat area, self-molding, coated or not, laminated or not, in one or more pieces, standalone or part of the capo, or combinations and variations of the above. Any manufacturers here, feel free to use the idea. You just cannot patent it.)

Anyhow, I'd think that thick strings would take increased pull better than thin strings. For the guitar, it's likely far better to stretch a thin string, but for the string itself, I'd think a thinner string would be much more prone to breakage if the tension is increased.
