We've had that discussion before and you were a part of it:

The Strings from every brand are proprietary, but there are only 2 sources Worldwide for the actual Wire Core.

Mapes Piano Wire Co. owns about 90% of the Market and also is a subcontractor for many Brands of Strings. Others use Mapes core wire and complete the mfg. process themselves or through other subs.

cheers!

D'Addario makes their own wire but they are the only string company that does.

However, like Lightnin MN said, each brand and model of string is made according to the specs provided by the company whose name is on the package. There are some companies who outsource the making of their strings. There are also many companies that wind their own. It's not just one or two companies making strings like the rumour goes. Also, just because SIT makes strings for other companies doesn't mean all SIT made strings are the same.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

There is a string maker in a town not far from me. I'm sure they order in the materials but they assemble the strings in shop to what ever specs you choose. You can mix any design and gauge they offer for custom sets. I've not tried them, but they are not expensive. Same price as any other set. I have seen some local celeb players in there picking up strings.

This is not true. D'Addario has (or at least used to have) their own wire extrusion facility in Connecticut, and was competing with Mapes even as they were also buying from them. Others have moved to other and cheaper spool wire producers than Mapes, and Mapes even almost went bankrupt a couple of years ago. Other manufacturers include Mount Joy Wire in Pennsylvania.
That said, companies like Mapes don't produce their own steel, but buy thicker wire and rods in bulk from undisclosed sources, and roll/extrude it to specs. Fagersta Steel AB in Sweden is one of the largest actual manufacturers, and a suspected supplier.

EB 10's for me. But I'm going back down to 9's since 10's are hard to play after taking a hiatus.

As far as electric is concerned, I use nothing but D'Addarios. For my Acoustics , I just started using Fender Phosphor Bronze 11-52 and am pleasantly surprised at not only how good they sound but also how long lasting they are as well .

This forum has been a source of information and enjoyment for a long time. Many informed and experienced people sharing their opinions and likes. Now here's my opinion on strings. I'm in my 60's, have always loved and collected electric guitars despite having no real musical talent, arthritis in my hands, and some loss of hearing too. So, the best guitar strings for my 40 plus guitars are D'Addarios because I like the price and the different color balls on the ends. My shortcomings make it real easy for me!
