I'm another in the Ernie Ball camp... I like these the most out of any other brand of strings.

They last long (and I play a LOT)... sound great, feel great.
10's (regular slinky) on a float... 11's (power slinky) w/ it decked or a hardtail.

Haven't tried the "cobalts" or other coated types... I see lots of folks seem to really like them but... If it ain't broke... why fix it?
Just IMO of course...

Ernie Ball Cobalts aren't coated. They're EB steel strings with an iron/cobalt alloy for the winding on the three bass strings. This makes them more ferromagnetic than just steel or nickel, which boosts the bass without going to thicker strings.

You might have thought of the EB Titanium coated strings? Those are different, and not my cup of tea. The titanium does nothing for the sound as titanium isn't magnetic, it just protects the string from corrosion.

Yah, I'm not a fan of steel wound strings at all. It makes them sound very harsh to my ears. The increase in bass response isn't worth it if you ask me. I like the smoothness and the easier playability you get with solid nickel windings. Not a fan of hex core wires for the same reason. Creates harshness. I will raise the bass end of my pickups a turn or two if I want the wound strings to be hotter. Nickel sounds best, IMO.
YMMV.

Funny Rookie Story coming: About six months after buying my MIA Strat I decided to change the strings. They sounded OK to me but as an amature fishing wire would probably sound ok to me. I thought the salesman said the Strats came with 0.10's on them and I had several sets of Dunlops on hand (sale items) so I set about messing with my perfectly fine guitar. 'Bout halfway thru I notice the bridge is cocked at a 45 degree angle and think 'Holy crap! I've bent my thousand dollar guitar!' I stopped and hit the computer watching videos about string changing and checked Fender's site and discovered this forum in the process. I got a good screwdriver and cranked the floating bridge ( I now know what that means) down and all was well. Next time near a music store I got some Fender Bullet 0.09's and installed them restoring the universe to balance. Scared myself for a bit at first though.
So many brands out there and all claiming to be the best. Some call the 0.10's light and some call them medium or regular. I bet this is a hot and recurring topic here.

Yeah... we all seem to be a bit on the "Freaky" side around here when it comes to stuff like strings.. floating the trem... decking/blocking the trem... what kind of picks we like to use... which cables sound better than others... how to clean our guitars... what products do we use t treat the fretboard.. how high or low our action is... what color tolex we prefer on our amplifiers.... and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on.... and on andon and on and on and on and on and on and on.... and then on and on some more!

Oh come on .... you can't take away the source of all our mojo!
Everybody knows the only way to true tonal nirvana is to use a curly cord ... that's how great tone gets its wonderful vibe ... from the signal oscillations back and forth and round and round in the cord.

Heretic! Twisted pair is it - bi-wired through Cat5 cables, for preference.

And never use a pick that you dropped, but get a new one, or your guitar will sound sour for weeks!
And don't let anyone whistle before a gig.
But most important of all, never go on stage wearing blue socks or underwear.
But you guys know all that.

I suspect you are forgetting about the five second rule. It's germs that turn plectrums sour. Snatch that puppy up in an instant and you'll be fine.

Using Elixir ploy-web coated 11's for the first time on a LP style guitar. Always avoided the more expensive strings. I like them though, they do have a nice feel and tone. I also use GHS Boomers in 9's on a Strat and like them too.

I like D'Addario's just fine, though the B string soured prematurely on the last set I used. Was browsing Amazon one day and scored a 12-pack of Fender 250's for $23.40 shipped. So far, so good. As they come stock on many Fenders, I am of the belief that they feed the pups a signature signal that creates the most Fender-y sound to my ears, and the playability falls somewhere between the slinkiness of EB's and the relative stiffness of D'Add's. YMMV...
Cheers!
(Then again, I may be subconsciously rationalizing due to the astonishing price...)

I thought the Fender branded strings were D'Addarios.

Ernie Ball, D'addario, La Bella, GHS, Roto-Sound for bass. Or what ever is handy when in need.

I started out using EB's. A while back I was installing new strings and the high E string broke at the ball end wrap. I installed a second high E string and it also broke at the same location. I sent Ernie Ball customer support an email describing the issue and asked if they possibly had a defective batch. I did not ask for any compensation. I never heard anything back from EB. Since then I've migrated to D'Addario ECG24's (flat would 11's). They sound good to my old ears, last a long time and don't finger squeak during slides. If I ever go back to EB's, I would get the strings with the reinforced ball ends.

I have a set of Curt Mangan's on my PRS right now. So far I like them, remind me or EB's. Generally I use GHS Boomers.

GHS Boomers are my Strat-style guitar pick for now, but that could change next time I see a fancy string package for cheap. 9's for a 25.5, 10's for shorter scale. I'm using 11's on a LP type guitar but I'm going back to 10's on it next change. I have used 12's and other heavy gauges but I'm getting lazy as I age, screw all that hard work. Plus, it really is a lot of tension on the neck. I've seen a lot of strats and teles with neck warp at the 12th fret lately. It's that warp that starts around the 12th or 15th fret and causes the action to be higher in the middle than on either end, with no neck relief. The truss rod won't adjust for that and really you have to shave the upper frets down to nearly nothing or re-work the fretboard. I just re-worked the fretboard on a project strat I have going. It had that warp. I radiused the fretboard to 14 degrees, cut the fret-slots deeper, and gave it a falloff of about 0.5mm from the 12 fret to the 21st. I'm looking forward to see how it turns out. It's the first time I've tried any falloff.
