Wow - finally, after years of denying, having attorneys issue cease & desists to degoopers and having people banned from forums, the owner of Vertex finally gave a "you caught me" mea culpa after Michael Landau publicly acknowledged the fraud and distanced himself from him, and Joe Bonamassa cussed hymn out for charging $2,000 for screwing up his pedalboard. Interesting reading.

This guy Mason has a career in esoteric home stereo products.

I'd avoid all of his Vertex products at all costs and this person in the future. Fool me once, shame on you, fool us 5 times...

yeah... i got a kick out of TGP threads regarding Freakish Blues re-branding the Joyo Ultimate Drive and selling them for 200 bucks. Some of those threads involved cats praising the "Alpha Drive" then when news broke that it was a Joyo with a resistor on the gain pot and goop on the PCB, they suddenly "Sucked"

It's why I only buy from guys I trust that have proven themselves over the years, such as:

Robert Keeley - I had him mod my Crybaby and TS9, and then bought his compressor, Katana Boost and his Fuzz Head pedals.
Paul Cochrane - his Timmy pedal is great.
David Barber - I've had his Direct Drive on my board for 14 years and still sounds great. David posts schematics on his site.
Xotic Effects - love the EP Booster.
John Suhr - his Shiba Drive is great, as is the Riot and other pedals I've tried.

None of these guys use goop and are straight up about what they do, and how they do it.

His mistake seems to have been to assume that no one would look inside. Many people - myself included - like to open up pedals and electronic gadgets as soon as they're out of the box.

Having just skimmed his post, I notice he bleats about giving money to public schools. That's very laudable but I find myself wondering how the school governors would feel about such apparently dishonestly earned money supporting their school.

And then in a moment of pure cynicism I find myself wondering if it's the school he sends his kids to.

I'd add these to the list:
Pete Cornish - Pete Cornish
Bill Finnegan - Klon
Zak Martin - Spaceman Effects

An example of the latter, which perhaps helps explain why these have a higher than average price:

Wow, should have just had it reversed engineered and parts manufactured with new specs in China. Then assembled in USA (because it saves big on export/import taxes) like everyone else. You're not supposed to do this but... You get the idea. Too bad college did not learn him that. Kudos on coming clean though. Sounds like a decent person that got caught up in the promise of a quick buck.

I'm not ready to give the guy kudos, nor do I consider him a decent person at all. He's only coming clean because he was caught and Michael Landau publicly distanced himself from Vertex and all of his lies were in the open. That's a much different apology than had he apologized before having lawyers and forum moderators harass those trying to expose the truth -- He denied they were copies as late as last week!

His actions/lack of actions and wording of his responses so far indicates a troubled mind that may not really know right from wrong - pathological liar comes to mind.

I guess I'm just hoping for the best. I don't really know about this. I would hate to see a person held down that was trying to change and move in a moral and decent direction. However, I have known people that would make an apology like that only as a tactical maneuver. I guess only time will tell.

from wiki:
pathological lying:

Epidemiology
Although little has been written about pathological lying, one study found a prevalence of almost 1 in 1,000 repeat juvenile offenders. The average age of onset is 16 years when the level of intelligence is average or above average. Also, they have shown above level verbal skills as opposed to performance abilities. 30% of subjects had a chaotic home environment, where a parent or family member had a mental disturbance. Its occurrence was found by the study to be equal in women and men but some believe it occurs more in women.Forty percent of cases reported central nervous system abnormality such as epilepsy, abnormal EEG findings, ADHD, head trauma, or CNS infection.

good observation nedorama, so sorry Matt psychopathology is treatable sometimes, a scary thought I know as it appears to be more prevalent then in the not so distant past. Keep the faith, stay focused and don't get distracted lol.
