My first guitar was a (borrowed from my uncle) 1961 Fender Duosonic. I first started on it when I was 12. By 14, it seemed very small ... life was much better when I got a Gibson SG Standard to replace it (and returned the Duosonic back to my uncle who still has it).

SGs are, in my opinion, underrated. The body construction cuts cost versus the original Les Paul, and that money can be spent on better features. And having a double cutout all the way down to the last fret makes it a great for lead guitar and thumb fretters.

I wish that Fender had a 24-fret wide neck model.

Can't speak toward the six strings but I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my short scale basses.

I have one Squier Musicmaster and one Fender Musicmaster, and a BG29 Acoustic bass.

The feel for a short scale is definitely something you love or hate, very subjective and depends on just what each player is looking for in terms of look/sound/playability.

Some of the greatest rock tones ever created came from SG's in some form or another. Santana, Young, Townshend, Zappa and countless others. Even the SG Jr. has tons of street cred. They're not really underrated. Way better fret access than a Les Paul or even a Strat. I know tons of players who have an SG in their herd.

I have a '65 Mustang and a '65 Jaguar and I love both of them and have never found them hard to play or uncomfortable as a matter of fact they both are a joy to play. I have often used both of them for gigging.Unless one has abnormally large hands,I can't see how anyone would have a problem playing either one of them, after all mandolin virtuoso Bill Monroe had an incredibly huge pair of mitts, yet he had no trouble being able to play some of the most unbelievable mandolin licks ever heard.

BTW: I wasn't aware of a short scale Strat, now I have yet another must have guitar. Speaking of must have guitars, the Tele with the Guild Anti-Hum humbucker should be a killer guitar-that is if the pickups are the same make up and specs as those used on Guilds in the '70s and '80s.I have an SG shaped '74 Guild S-100-NB and it can blow just about any Les Paul or SG out of the water.Even the dyed in the wool Les Paul fanatic that Blinkers is,he is just plain bowled over by the Guild and agrees that it's a Les Paul/SG slayer, that's why I'm hoping that these are the same model pickup that's in the Tele-if so,it probably be the most deadly Tele ever made.

My first bass was a 2003 Fender Mustang Bass. The shorter scale made it easier to jump from a Strat and back again. Also easy to jump from the Mustang to my PJ bass and back. However, going from the Strat to the PJ fumbles up my fingers for the first eight bars.

The nice thing about the Pawn Shop Mustang Bass, it has a 1.5" Jazz nut.
