I already said Jimmy Page, and I am sticking with it ... but an honorable mention for cool should got to the boys from Thin Lizzy (Phil Lynott, Scott Gorham, Brian Robertson).

Perfect honorable mention 01GT eibach. the band with Phil at the helm is coolness personified. Their albums music defines cool in rock and roll of the 70s just as Elvis and his band did in the 50s. Thanks for posting that reminder. 8)

RE Kurt Cobain

Eh? He wasn't a useless tit, troubled maybe but still a talented artist. If you don't know check it out!

Now back to the subject. IMHO One of the coolest bands of the genre, Wishbone Ash

especially the Laurie Wisefield era.

The coolest guitarist to me has to be George Benson on his early days. There's something on his smoothness that just gets me every time. That or Jason Becker fiddling around with his yo-yo while shredding the hell out of his Carvin.

Fresh after watching Pink Floyd's 1972 movie "Live In Pompeii" i would have to say David Gilmour is pretty bloody amazing!
But, after really thinking about it Jimi Hendrix would HAVE to go down as the best. I tend to rate a guitarist by how easy he can possibly be imitated and Hendrix's style was from such a deep personal state that he's virtually impossible to truly copy or imitate.
