ButchA, the diamond in the rough, only Jimi had the footwork moves rhythm before or since. That's wood shedding brothers and sisters. All of the guitar teachers and all of the music schools couldn't get that technique together forever and ever again. Some have come close and I think of singer/guitarist Freddie Stone and bassist Larry Graham whose rhythm moves and footwork were like the Temptations with guitars, if you didn't move to that music you must have been dead lol. 8) :D

Most iconic rockabilly appearance ever, guy can play sing and dance with the best of them, stage presence is very entertaining, sweet tone from a very simple setup, and has been doing it for decades. How he fails to make it into any of the top 100 best guitarist of all time lists I'll never know.

That's a very valid post.

My definition of "cool" is laid back, nothing gets you upset or up tight, you take what comes at you as if it didn't matter. So, "bad $@!" is not "cool", not that there is anything wrong with being "bad $@!". When I think of a "cool" guitar player, the first one that comes to my mind is Eric Clapton. 8)

Hound Dog Taylor

He said (about himself), "When I die, people are gonna say, 'He couldn't play worth $.&@, but it sure sounded good!'"

That is cool.

I disagree. He's good, and has a stage presence, but the question wasn't about that.

I just don't see any cool from Brian Setzer. He doesn't exude any of the "I shan't be bothered with what you think" attitude. On the contrary, he seems to be very concerned with what people think and how he appears to others, bordering on peacockiness. In my opinion, he's as uncool as they come.
Be honest here - is this the image of cool?

JJ Cale had cool in spades. Billy Gibbons is cool. And here's a nice collection of cool:

For me:

Jimmy Page had/has a really smooth right hand, which is cool;
I've always thought Joe Perry of Aerosmith was cool, ditto for Steve Marriott of Small Faces/Humble Pie fame;
Joe Walsh is pretty cool;
The younger B.B. King was really cool, with his cocked head and closed eyes when he bent a string.

Hendrix or Dick Dale, both very cool guitarists... i would say Hendrix reigns supreme on my list.

Who's that? Jonathan Ross?

Took me second to recognize him, I thought it was Brad Whitford of Aerosmith at first, Adrian Smith is a bad $@!

I already said Jimmy Page, and I am sticking with it ... but an honorable mention for cool should got to the boys from Thin Lizzy (Phil Lynott, Scott Gorham, Brian Robertson).

I think that the absolute coolest guitarist as far as performance and stage presentation goes,has to be Jimi Hendrix.Once Jimi hit the stage he exuded raw passion and confidence and always managed to put off such a sexually charged performance that the groupies practically engaged in all out war to offer themselves to him.As his road manager Eric Barrett used to describe Jimi's onstage antics "his elaborate rape of the amps and his F (intercoursing) king of the guitars".This used to send audiences in a frenzy as his blatant sexual displays way surpassed that of James Brown and actually made Brown's moves look like a Sunday school pageant.Jimi's ability to play the guitar in so many positions and in such unorthodox a manner also his playing was so over the top and beyond what anyone had ever heard anyway-that added an incredible amount to the coolness factor.

Of course before Jimi came along I think that John Lennon would have to take first prize for coolness factor.From The Beatles' first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show there was no denying that of all the Beatles,John exhibited the biggest air of almost swash-buckling confidence and that just translated into an immeasurable amount of coolness.
