Doyle is a cool dude for certain.
He's a damned good looking man.
He's got chops out the wazoo.
He sings. And does it well.
All of his playing is tasty.
His taste in women is perfect.
He's a sharp dresser, no sweat pants for this guy.
Not only does he play lefty but he does it with your righty guitar. That right there is some kinda magical power. Not just backwards but also upside down.

Joe Strummer.

(Bonus points: he was dead before Fender decided to turn rebellion into money with the signature Tele)

Define "cool".
James Dean cool?
Malcolm X cool?
Queen Elizabeth II cool?

The Clash weren't about rebellion, they were about social awareness and equality. His family got Fender's money, and he probably would have took it too.

I'm reffing White Man In Hammersmith Palais.
And yeah, The Clash signed to CBS, so purity was not their goal. So maybe he would have "sold out". But dying before you get the chance keeps your reputation cool.

I don't believe the Clash ever sold out. They made the records they wanted to make, for better or worse at times. Being successful at it isn't selling out. Making records you're told to make is.

I don't think Joe ever managed to get rich, his net worth at death was about a 1 million GBP. So if he were alive, he would have deserved every penny Fender would have paid IMO. No doubt that would have dented his cool with some.

This is where I always think of Jimmy Page and his Dragon suit. I don't know it can get any cooler than that for me.

I think you hit the nail on the head .. Jimmy Page with the low-slung Les Paul, the use of the violin bow, and (of course) the Gibson double neck ushered in the term "guitar hero".

How many times can this question be rehashed as a new thread?

There's a legion of cool players. The question is far too open ended. In what genre? Studio or live? What era? Electric or acoustic?

Probably not going to make any friends saying this because 44 years after his overdose death Jimi Hendrix still has an unequaled influence. Hendrix for all his talent turned out to be a sad figure to me in the long run and a reminder of what was both good and bad about music of that era.

For me it would have to be Brian Setzer.
Most iconic rockabilly appearance ever, guy can play sing and dance with the best of them, stage presence is very entertaining, sweet tone from a very simple setup, and has been doing it for decades. How he fails to make it into any of the top 100 best guitarist of all time lists I'll never know.
