I want a mic for micing my amp live, but I'm not familiar with mics at all so I have no idea what I'm looking for. First do I look for dynamic or condenser mics? Any recommendations?

The traditional mic for amps is the SM57.

We use Sennheiser E906 mics on both our Mustang III and IV on stage. Not quite as bright as an SM-57 which makes it less sensitive to being placed closer to the cone of the speaker. These have been real workhorses and never had any problem with them.

I use an ancient and severely beaten SM57, never really tried anything else live.

I did some recording in Germany once where the engineer had two 57's on the speaker, two ambient condensers and a 57 on the back of the cab to pick up all the low-frequency rumble, that was a really fantastic sound but a bit impractical for live work.

A dynamic mic may be the more practical way to go. Dynamics are used for high SPL (volume) and do not require phantom power. You also tend to have to be right up on the diaphragm, so it's harder for them to pick up ambient noise.

Condenser mics have more transient sensitivity (dynamic range) and can still handle high SPL, but they do require phantom power and tend to pick up more ambient sound.

SM 57 or Beta 57 are both standards. Sennheiser has some great options. Sure has some other good options, and then finding the sweet spot on your cabinet. Guys with give you all kinds of predefined spots of where to place it, but I would use your ears and go with that, in the end, you want the mic to pic up the sound that you want the audience to hear.

SHURE SM57 or SENNHEISER E609. The E609 isn't good for much of anything else while the SM57 is probably the most versatile microphone in the world. Either works for electric guitar amps and there are people in both camps.

The main reasons condensers are not used much out of the studio are oversensitivity and fragility. I can see using one to record guitar in a studio, but not on stage or in a club or outdoor concert. Condensers, even cardioid ones, pickup everything, have terrible feedback rejection and the cheaper ones are not shock mounted meaning they pickup stage vibration which they convert to rumble. As a general rule condensers belong in the studio, or at least indoors. Outdoors a condenser microphone turns a gentle breeze into a roar. Condensers are very fragile also as rule and will have a shorter life span if you gig them.

I have been doing audio for over 35 years and I vote for the Sure SM 57 they always work, pretty standard, under $100 what more can you ask for, Placement of the mic is much more critical than the mic itself. Pointed directly in the cone give real bright, as you move it away from the center cone toward the basket it gets a smoother tone and it all depends on the sound you are wanting, you can experiment with the angle of the mic placement as well. Also I do not like hanging a mic over the cabinet I do prefer a stand as I feel there is more control that way. Remember this is just my personal preference.

I like (and have for a long time) the SM-57s and these

Another vote for the Sennheiser e609. It's all I ever use.

I have the Sennheiser e609 and it is very easy to work with. Bro Dave is right about it being a one function mic, as far as it operating at what it is best at.
