Okay, up to four pages now with all kinds of passing discussion, and nobody has anything to say about the instrument line itself?

Lucky for me, my small-town music store has one of these hanging on the wall this week, a Sonic Blue Telecaster just like the one on the first page. I sat down and played with it for half an hour, and I'm really impressed! I think I'm going to treat myself to this guitar for my birthday coming up! Who knows how long a 'Limited Edition Run' from the factory may be around...

I had never tried the 9-14 contoured radius before, and I like the feel of it. I didn't notice the transition at all, but can say it was easy to play all the way up the neck. To the 21st fret. Where is that high D note? What am I going to do with a C#? Oh well, just a nitpick. The fit and finish in the inlaid rosewood was excellent, very smooth and not likely for me as an older player to ever wear out two woods at different rates. If something were to happen to the neck, I could always sub in a regular Tele neck, as I doubt that Fender retooled the cutout for a different neck size. This one does look nice though. I usually use Fender 10 Bullets, and this was strung with 9s, but played like butter.

The two pickups were very Tele-ish, lots of twang and plunk to them. I imagine they will sound a bit richer in my Fender Bassman 4x10 amp than they did in the store. For the purists, there is a belly contour in the body to sniffle over, but it was comfy to play, and I wasn't looking for true vintage anyway.

So, just on the merits of the instrument itself, I'd give Fender a High 5 on this one. I'm usually a Strat player, and was all set to order myself a '59 American Vintage RI in Sherwood Green, but I can get that later. I have an '89 Tele that I love to play, and think this new one will be a worthy addition to the guitar rack. I hope that some of the rest of you get the chance to lay hands on one of these soon and see what you think.

Besides, bass players should just pound on the low E and stay in the background.....maybe they can be allowed to sing backing vocals occasionally, if they aren't too loud. Other than that, they should be silent, and they don't need anything fancy on which to play.
Good thing nobody ever tried to tell Les Claypool that.

I bought one of the Select strats with the rosewood neck and birdseye fretboard, hss combo and in the only finish I believe they offered, a bing cherry sunburst. I really like the oil finished neck and the compound radius. Good pickups in this guitar!! I have not yet totally dialed it in for my preferred .49 to .11 gauge strings, but it joins another strat in the fleet, a 1996 American Standard with both a maple neck and a great rosewood board neck from 1996 as well. That guitar has Lollar Blonde pickups in it, and has been my only Strat for ten years or so.
I think the channel bound neck is a good idea, and if FMIC keeps putting out the level of quality in their instruments that my newest has, I'll keep buying 'em.
I read one internet post that indicated only 300 of the rosewood/birdseye neck Select were made, anyone know for sure?

Friday night in the big town, and I went back to the store and bought the Telecaster. Luckily for me, no Weekend Warriors had put any scratches or dings on the body, and the thing plays like a dream. My favourite Strats are gonna have to sit and chill for a while as I get acquainted with this new lady...

Alas, a weekend full of nightshifts in the hospital. Guess I better open a Photobucket account as well...

I really like the idea of channel bound fret boards, really like the looks and feel. The Am Std is very close, but I want an SSS with the channel bound rosewood neck and maple fret board, and pups that I don't already have. I just might have to go with an HSS. 8)
