Right lets see who can tell a Mexican Standard, An American Standard and a Custom Shop Telecaster apart.

No, I'm not taking part on that aspect. IMHO, there ain't a pair of ears that could, it would be just guessing.

But here I jump on the bandwagon - just to show preferences are totally depending on the listener.
My favorite on those is #1 - and not because I'd love that sound you recorded, but because that sound leads me to believe that with right (for me...) settings that guitar would really howl&growl.

Based on appearances only, the MIM is the only one with a maple neck... and it's CAR... if only it had a pearloid pickguard...

Ha. It's fascinating how this seems to be turning on Clip 1. Some like it best, some like it least.

I suspect that's because it's the one that at any rate sounds most distinctive. The other two are pretty close to each other.

Ian, perhaps you should leave this thing running a bit longer, just to gain some more views? It's quite interesting, and with a nice spread of opinions nobody needs to feel foolish when the result comes out. Vive la difference! :)

Cheers - C

I promise: I won't feel foolish if the one I liked turns out to be a/b/c, all of the above, or none of the above.

But for those who throw punches for or against some models/wood choises/pickups etc; this is another nice blind test to show their expertise.

Clip 1 for me was a tad cranky ( I never said cranky was a bad thing)
Clip 2 for me was less cranky ( I never said less cranky was a bad thing)
Clip 3 for me was less crankier than 1, and more janglier than both, almost Rick sounding, this is the guitar I would purchase. I could always add more crank, don't know if the crank could be taken out of 1.

They all sound similar enough for me to just pick the price point I'd be happy paying. Certainly not enough difference to compel me to buy the most expensive over the cheapest.

Just as well I only had enough to order a MIM. Sight unseen and unplayed. That's lefthandland for you. So tests don't really help any...

Ah, then my ear served me well. I would have taken the CS for rhythm and the Standard for lead. Though, don't both models now run CS pick ups? I will give points to the Mexican Strat, though. Until the bass was dropped out it's harshness actually helped it cut through the mix. If I was the kind of player who always played with distortion that would probably be the axe I'd want. It's high output in stray frequencies would actually help it in that regard for a punk style sound. Cool project! Thanks!

Just goes to show why the American Standard is the "Standard" to be judged by!
