I just tried to get into the Fender Music store to check out the shirts, jackets and other apparel but was met with the announcement "Sorry the Fender Store is only open to U.S. residents".I can't see why this is,after Canada does supposedly have a free trade agreement with the U.S. and we can buy Fender products from retailers in Canada and even from U.S. dealers. It would be impossible for Canadian music stores to stock all the Fender apparel line and all the Fender accessories and equipment plus it would be hardly worth a retailer's time to order one particular hat,T-shirt,jacket etc. so we are $hit out of luck if we want a particular item.Having said all that I'd love to know why Canadians and people from other countries can't avail of the Fender Store.

The store is currently unavailable for customers outside the US but perhaps someday it will be, so be patient.

Hi Derek. Fender is a customer friendly company to be sure, that they would like to sell products to people of other countries is an understatement. Regulations and taxes imposed on American based companies by our very own government make something that simple impossible unfortunately. We all wait patiently for our government to adopt a common sense rationale to benefit citizens and society but shouldn't hold our breath. Bureaucrat's and bureaucracy's are the government now and in the foreseeable future so if something doesn't support their peculiarly special interests it is viciously opposed. In light of that unpleasant truth we still love you, hope that helps.

Correct. In fact, you are not allowed to enter the online store if you are not located in the US.

In the UK the Fender Store allows me to view products and add them to basket.

A lot of US companies prohibit dealers from exporting. So-called "grey imports" into this country would undercut established vendors and I'm sure FMIC wouldn't want their own website doing exactly that.

It's pretty archaic. If they were going to do international purchases in their store they would have by now. Essentially opening an online store for all types of their products would increase profits and benifit but it seems that the powers that be are an old boys club caught back in the 90's filling the pockets of their distributors who sell up to almost double the price outside the USA.

If they could legally make money selling this stuff internationally they would be. That's what it's all about.

Indeed. One of the big barriers is the lack of free trade agreements between countries, and a big mess of levies, duties and taxes.
An open market with EU on consumer products was supposed to be ready for signing in April, but went nowhere because of partizanism[1].
Then there are national consumer rights and protections that may be at odds with what a company will offer to the domestic market. Examples include things like warranty scopes[2], marketing restrictions[3] and data collection laws.
And finally, there may be products that are outright illegal on the foreign market[4], and where special export models have to be distributed.

All in all, selling through distributors who are already set up for adhering to the local laws and regulations may be far easier and more profitable.

[1]: US politicians who will vote against and block what they claim to be all for, if presented by the other party. Either party. What usually happens in these cases is that a couple of years later (American voters have very short memories), a joint proposal from moderates in each party will be presented, with enough pork added to make the radical representatives in either party happy. It's a disgrace. But at least it may happen in a couple of years, if Brussels is still willing at that time.
[2]: A minimum of two years full and transferable warranty, for example.
[3]: The US is pretty much caveat emptor. EU is strongly regulated in favor of consumer protection. Examples include stating the actual final sales price including taxes to the customer, and words like "free" and "lifetime" that legally mean different things.
[4]: Like RoHS and nickel directives, or bans on certain woods. Or designs and words that are protected, like national flags and certain geographical names. Should Fender choose to call a finish "Bordeaux Red", it might have to be called something else for a EU market. Or designs that are outright forbidden, like symbols of Nazism. This ring, for example, might run afoul of German laws:
