A couple of evenings ago while eating supper I mentioned to my better half,an electric sitar that I had seen on E-bay and just mentioned in passing how cool a Christmas gift one of them would make.Rather than slapping me upside of the head with a pork chop she told me to go ahead and order it.This is the same woman who told me 5 guitars ago "No more Guitars." This blew me away because whenever she comes home and I have one of my Ravi Shankar albums playing she asks me to turn it off right away. She recently was offered a very fair retirement package when her job was declared redundant a few weeks back and is due to retire on Sept. 24 and ever since nothing seems to phase her-I think I'm going to go for a drum kit for my birthday while she's still experiencing the high from the prospect of retirement.

The electric sitars look to be of really good quality and from a demo video they had on their site, they sound just like the classic Indian sitar.I have always loved the music of India and have almost idolized Ravi Shankar and having a sitar has always been a dream of mine. They are shipped from India and I don't know how long it will take to travel to the East coast of Canada,so I will have to order it today or tomorrow. I can't wait to get my mitts on that puppy-the Electro Harmonix B-9 pedal will have to go on hold for the time being-unless my daughters are feeling really generous this Christmas.

" 5 guitars ago !!!!!" You must have one of those I'm going to get nagged to death looks Derek for your wife to give in so easily, or is it the puppy dog eyes trick? never been near a sitar myself, always sound as though I'd need the extra arms of that hindu god to make it anywhere near sensible, hope you have a blast with it Derek.

Me listening to rap!!!???!!!Heaven forbid, I'd subject myself to a battery acid enema before I'd listen too rap. My wife isn't at all musically inclined and in fact music doesn't really interest her that much, although she does like 60's hits etc. but can't stand my alternative or classical music.Anyway she has softened somewhat on the guitar issue ever since one night I had a heart to heart with and told her that where she isn't a musician or music lover like I am,that she can't comprehend what music is to me.I told her about how much the issue with the deterioration of my hands was affecting me and that I'd rather loose the use of both legs than loose the use of just one finger and said that growing up in a home with a church organist and a choir director,I was just steeped in music since day one and music is absolutely the most important thing in my life.Anyway with a bit more pouring my heart out to her she finally realized finally that music is such a big part of me and ever since then she hasn't gone ballistic or had any nuclear melt-downs when I mentioned getting a new instrument.

Anyway there's a new development on the musical instrument front.I have contacted a guy who is selling a late '60s/early '70s Hammond organ that still works and is asking less than $100 for it.From what I can gather it's too big and nobody plays it so he's letting it go.I mentioned this to the missus and she just asked what I'd do with the other Hammond,I told her that I would give it to my nephew. This Hammond isn't as big as the B-3 and doesn't have as many features, but it does have draw bars and I believe that it also has a tone wheel.

I also have tracked down a very large double manual Hammond that's just a couple of steps below the B-3 and the owner is giving it away,it kicks out and turns itself off a few seconds after you turn it on.I know that this was a problem with some older Hammonds because they had the same problem with the one in the nursing home that my mother was in,the guy who fixed it has retired but I know him very well and he's still doing work on the side to escape boredom.

This other guy is also giving away a top of the line old Lowery organ, it appears to be the same model that The Beatles used during their sessions all the way from "Mr. Moonlight" to "Blue Jay Way" and beyond.A few of the keys don't work but that's the only problem. This is quite a dilemma because I don't know which one(s) to get. Each one has it's merits and each one has its drawbacks...I love Hammonds but to be able to get the same organ tones that I grew up listening to on all my Beatle albums would really be something else.Decisions decisions.

I'm just going by what I read in The Beatles Gear book,Sir George speaks of making extensive use of the Lowery over the years and mentioned several of their songs-with older ones among them-where the Lowery was used.In the meantime I have found out more about the Hammond,it is a late '60s L-122 model and apparently it was the preferred touring organ for Jon Lord and Keith Emerson,in fact I watched a demo of the L-122 where the guy doing the demo ran the L-122 through a Big Muff Pi and played some Deep Purple riffs that sounded identical to Jon Lord's historic riffs. The organ has a tone wheel and a lot of the same features as the B-3 but in a smaller package.Anyway I found out that Kijiji gave the wrong info as to its location and instead of being just 15 miles away,it's about 150 miles away.My buddy Blinkers has come to me rescue-as the organ is too big to fit in the back of my Santa Fe-and has offered to go out in his pickup with me to get it on the weekend-how's that for a great guy???I am wondering about the F-2000 that's being given away,I went on an organ forum this afternoon and asked the experts there if any of them knew if the problem of it shutting down right after it was turned on.If this organ is a relatively easy fix,I just may pick that up too,but then again since I will have 2 Hammonds by then, the Lowery would probably be a better choice.
