I found an interesting site called My Amp Tech. It's from a tech by the name of Robert Hull. He does a lot of the amp kit stuff with Tube Depot. His stuff is linked on Facebook
https://www.facebook.com/robert.hull.798 and is really interesting. He has a lot of repair tips as well as photos of amps with problems. It shows it can and does happen to any manufacturer from cheap to boutique amps. Rob Hull is a nice guy. I had some questions about my amp build as well as other tech questions after I built my 5e3 clone and he answered very quickly. I find him to be a great resource which is why this winter I'm building a Marshall 1974x clone from Tube Depot. I like the documentation that comes with the kit.

+1 Rob is a good guy to deal with. Tube Depot were good to deal with.

My 5E3 kit amp is still my goto amp. Maybe its time to have another kit amp build project?

Al, I'm going to build the Tube Depot Marshall 18 watt clone. I built the 5e3 too and I think it's a great amp. It has a little more kick to it than an original. Could be because of the GZ34 rectifier tube. I put a Weber 12A125A in it and I sounds amazing. I gig with it all the time and have had zero problems with it. A friend of mine has the Marshall and it would be cool to see a side by side. I've used his Marshall rig a few times and really like it. I going to build it with a switchable solid state rectifier. It should give me a little more headroom and slightly more power.

Hi Supro

I too swapped out the Jenson speaker that came with the order originally, for a Weber alnico after a few months.

The mains voltage here seemed a bit high which made the B+ volts high too and an easy mod suggested by Rob was to fit a transformer in the supply line eg 240/9 whose secondary would then drop the voltage ingoing to the amp circuitry by that 9 volts.

I shall look forward to your next build .... cheers mate.

Nice work AL here's mine. I also chose the "Brown Devil" resistor.
It's a great sounding amp IMO.

Nice builds fellas, I have one of these little beauties myself and agree it's one of the nicest sounding amps I've heard. Rob Hull tweaked it just right, it's louder than a typical 5E3 (mine's hellishly loud, it has a Texas Heat speaker in it) and stays cleaner for a while longer up the volume scale, the Bass response is REAL solid with the Texas Heat, it never gets any flab vent at full tilt, I reckon if this was a production amp, people would be all over it!

Plus the board is really, really nice. Double sided, plated through-holes and nice wide traces.

Exactly mate, it is an example of how to properly do a PCB and end up with a lifetime gig machine. The build design and tone of this amp convinced me that the internet rhetoric about PCB amps does not apply to this amp at all, I'd be confident to fix/repair anything that could possibly go wrong with it, not that I think anything will. The first one I built gets hammered for several hours each week at gig volume (for almost 3 years now) with not a single hiccup. Actually it's still running the JJ's that came with it!

Snowy, your build post was one of the reasons I built mine. I know you built two. I think you upgraded some components.
