Hi,

I would like your opinions on the following;
Some of you might have read my topic about a MIJ Strat i got for free.
Its a MIJ Strat from 1987 or 1986 with a Kahler Spyder trem.

I've been playing on it for a while, but its not really my style.
Don't like the ivory color and chrome parts, atleast not anymore. Im more into the matte colors, like all white and matte black elements. Or one color finish, like Red and then use matte black elements/parts. I would also like to remove the 2 tone switches, and make the 5-way switch a 3-way LP like switch.

My question is, is this smart? I dont know the value of the quitar at this moment. So it might be wise to trade it instead of "ruin" its original state.

Greetings.

Where do you see / or what do you call a 2 tone switches ? .

You don't like this guitar , why don't you sell it or trade it for one you like .

Don't loose you time and money to paint it and mod it .

Sell it, then use the cash to get something that you want or could customize. I got a MIM ash strat in Sienna Sunburst for less than $300, sat in some college kids room for 4 years collecting dust, I cleaned it up, put in some Rio Grande pickups and it is a legitimate player, the nice thing was that if I messed anything up on it, it wasn't like it was destined to be an heirloom, customizing itself is one of the great things about strats

He possibly means the two tone knobs, and might prefer either a wiring with a single tone knob and two volume knobs, or change the tone knobs from neck / bridge+mid to bass and treble knobs (as in some G&Ls).

Sorry for my bad english haha, i meant the 2 tone knobs*
Under the volume knob.

And I would probaly trade it, if i knew the actual value.

My wish is to trade it for a ESP LTD EC-1000.

The thing with this guitar is, i can play any genre on it, from eric clapton like stuff to metal it sounds pretty good, i play guitar for 11 years now so i noticed that instantly. But i just dont like the looks..

Thanks for your help btw :)

My strat used to be a MIK strat of that exact same color but with a standard 6 screw trem. I loved the way it felt and played in the store but wasn’t fond of the color. Since I loved the way it felt, I bought it anyway. After deciding I couldn’t live with the color, I made the mistake of modding it beyond recognition. Take the advice above, don’t go down the path I’m on right now.

You got it for free so it’s a win win. That is of course as long as there’s no chance you have to give it back.

Good luck

I don't see any point in modifying the guitar if you're thinking of trading it.

When you customise a guitar to your tastes you inevitable reduce its valuie to anyone with different tastes. However "good" or expensive your modifications may, if a buyer doesn't like them then he or she simply will not buy the guitar. If you're keeping it then by all means make whatever changes you want. Just don't expect to see that money back if you sell.
