I bought the great fender mustang II just over a year ago, I know a regular amp would bore me to tears. I gig with it and use it for every thing. I was talking to a guy the picked the III over the weaker II. One reason was the better 12" speaker. I think his is 100 watts vs my 40, that can be a factor. Does the speaker make the mustang III a lot better?

Another YES. Not being chained to Fuse and a lap top or tablet just makes things easier too.

Cheers,

I agree, the speaker and the added wattage are pluses for the M III

I have a III and a IV, Gigged with the IV a few weeks ago (usually gig with my marshall combo) but the IV rocked out just fine. A lot easier moving that verses the 2x12 combo 2x12 ext cab and my pedaltrain rig. (Truth be told, the Marshall does cut into the mix a bit better stage volume wise)

I have a Mustang II and a Mustang V half-stack. You have to use Fuse to adjust 1/3 of the presets on the M-II, but on the III, IV and V, you can tweak everything just with the amp(and, of course, there are a lot more presets to begin with). I use the M-II quite a bit in the studio and for dinking around, but if I want to CRANK, I use the Mustang V - love that 4x12 cabinet and all that wattage!

If you are going to play out, you really need at least the Mustang III. I have a friend in MN who bought the M-III, then told me hated it and couldn't stand a 1x12 combo... but he kept messing with it and now it is all he uses.

The Mustang III is also open backed, vs the closed back of the I & II. That also makes a difference in the sound.

Most of the amps modelled in V1, save the Marshalls, the MesaBoogie and the Peavey, are open back also. I believe the above named heads all use closed back cabs.

No idea on the Hi-Watt, the Orange, or the Silvertone from V2.

Some other extra features in addition to those mentioned above that come with the III and up:

Effects Loop
ports for both 2 and 4 button footswitches. (you can use both simultaneously!)
III comes with the 2 button footswitch; IV and V come with the 4 button footswitch.
( the expression pedal plugs into the 4 button switch, so you can use all 3)

V2- XLR out.

There are a few things you still need Fuse to do, but everything you'd want to do on the fly- like at a gig or a practice/rehearsal- is done right on the amp itself. This is a huge plus for gigging guitarists. No need to bring your expensive and delicate laptop/ Macbook etc to a gig- exposing it to theft, damage, etc. Simplifies setup, too.

The extra power is a plus for playing out, and the III, for example will get VERY loud, but- since it is a digi/solid state amp- it also does bedroom volume quite nicely, and it will "do" any tone it can make at any volume.

Plus, if you are a pedal guy, and like your pedal board setup, it'll work with this amp, too. You will need to adjust your approach to using dirt pedals, though. ( you use them to add flavor, NOT to kick the amp in the teeth.)

I have a V1 MIII, and I love it! I feel the same way you do- a "normal" tube or solid state amp would be a bit too much of a one trick pony after having this amount of flexibility. I still have a long GAS list of vintagey tube amps I'd like to have...

The MIII's the way to go... Love mine!
Celestion speaker is serious... easy to adjust onstage... get the 4 button footswitch too... that's a must have w/ this amp 8)
