Good luck to the OP. The fact that Fender makes vintage spec guitar and not bass necks for sale disgusts me. This company has been steadily turning into just another crap guitar maker over the past few years. Everything's going modern and as if the ridiculous amount of neglect they show to their bass customers wasn't enough before. It's getting worse by the year. Maybe they should stop buying up garbage companies and trying to compete with companies that just make bad knock offs of the guitars that made them famous and get back to churning out real Fenders?

Playing style and Touch, as mentioned above, both have a lot to do with Fret wear.

So does the Fret design and the material it's made from.

Most are an alloy of Copper, Nickel and Zinc.

Stainless Steel Frets often last the life of a guitar due to their hardness, but the trade-off is that you'll replace strings more often for the same reason, and may not appreciate the Sonic difference.

Replacing the neck isn't always a good option because these often require fret work to get them playing well, but can be cheaper sometimes than a full-on Fret Job.

There's also the option of just replacing the frets which are worn, a great option for someone with a 'heavy' touch, or new players who concentrate their playing on the Low end of the neck.

Here's probably more than you ever wanted to know about Frets and Fret Wear:

Understanding Frets and Fret Wear

cheers!

Having stainless steel frets for over a year with no conceivable wear.....I'll NEVER go back to nickel alloy. No conceivable adverse issue with tone either.
As to strings wearing out quicker, I use nano web 10's and change the strings about every 4 months due only to the strings becoming worn.......but it's well worth the price of strings vs. having to level/replace frets every 2 years (and re-set up).
Stainless steel frets are for people that wanna play more....and fuss less.

As well as those ~10% of the population who have a nickel allergy or sensitivity.

The nickel used in strings and frets is probably far above the legal limit in Europe (max 5 nanograms Ni released per square millimeter per week when subjected to a sweat-like solution), so changes may be coming anyhow.

Nothing says "Progress" forcing people to make choices at the end of a gun. I play flats. I'll probably be dead by the time I have to worry about fret wear on my bass. When I use rounds I do like nickel rounds. It's been years, and I don't see myself changing back at this point. Maybe I should buy a couple sets just in case I change my mind?

It sucks that Fender doesn't even offer replacement necks for the guitars they sell...blows my mind that if i ever want to replace this neck on my AVRI, I won't be able to!

If anyone knows where to find a USA Fender - maple, 7.25, Modern C, vintage frets with a gloss lacquer finish...let me know!

Hello again, teleric - they do:

http://www.fender.com/store/strat-necks/

Repacement necks are a fairly recent departure for Fender and so far they don't cover all the models. But the selection on that page is gradually growing. If you contact Rob schwarz at Customer Services he may be able to tell you when the model you need will be added to their list, and it might even be that he can help you get what you want sooner. Rob is an amazing stand up guy and will help you if he possibly can. It's worth asking him very politely! :)

Also, to answer something you asked earlier:

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. It depends whether the luthier can get the old frets off without damaging the existing lacquer. Sometimes they come out quite easily, sometimes the lacquer cracks and chips. If that happens then you have to take it off and respray. Even so, it's not a giant job and all a normal part of refretting maple fingerboards. Nothing to worry about, and cheaper than a new genuine Fender neck.

Cheers - C

My 92 Stratocaster has vintage sized frets on it and they're in great shape.

To give you an idea, the neck has bare wood on it from being played so much and the frets probably have 70% life left. Before me, they had never been dressed.

It's all in your playing style and how well you maintain your guitars, when it comes down to it, though these early Korean Fenders are known for their fret durability.
