Last night I got to see Joe Bonamassa and Jimmy Vivino play in a small local bar that held about 100 people. They did an hour long set of Johnnie Winter songs. Joe didn't hold back and was wailing from the first song. Vivino played very well also, and they got into some nice dueling leads.
The band that opened for them is called Brethren of the Coast and has Duane Betts on guitar, he's Dickie Betts son. They had a second guitarist called Pablo that tore it up on slide guitar. They were very impressive and I was surprised I hadn't heard of them before.
It was pretty cool to see quality acts like that in a small bar. I was glad I went. Here's a pic:

Sounds like a great show and venue.

Hi Drew. The first time I got to see Joe Massivebona was in a venue not much bigger than that, and it was one of the all-time best gigs I've ever seen. A truly brilliant experience.

I've followed him over the years through gradually larger and larger venues. I don't blame anyone for playing the biggest room they can fill with an audience, and Joe definitely paid his dues for many years in the tiny places, but I can't help noticing that my enjoyment of his shows has gently decreased as the theatres have got bigger and bigger. Now he's mostly doing the biggest stages and even arenas I think I may not bother buying his (now very expensive) tickets anymore. It just ain't as much fun as it used to be.

Almost everyone is at their best in a small room, where you can see the whites of their eyes and hear the sound coming straight off their amp, without a PA getting in the way. I think that is especially true with Joe. 12 feet in front of his rig his tone is amongst the finest I've ever heard, and somehow his personality works best in that sort of space too, where he's not trying to reach people he can't see a hundred yards away out in the darkness.

All bands have their optimum sized venue, and with Joe it's a very small one. So I think you got very lucky indeed and I'd have loved to have been there with you!

Cheers, man - C

Thanks Rollie; I didn't think to search youtube for them. They had a bit more energy the other night. I think they are getting their act together as they mature.
