Here's a clip which epitomises everything that a bass player could possibly do wrong.

That's what a lot of guitarists want in a bass player.

I don't know who the middle guy is but I can tell you that I haven't met many guitarists that would want a Sting in their band. As a bassist I really dig him. He's a good bassist, and frontman. However, it's a credit to Andy Summers that his managed to play behind that ego as long as he did. Especially given how talented he is. That goes for Copeland, too. He is one of my favorite drummers. Want to look at what a band does with a bassist like that. Gary Valentine, Blondie's original bassist was awesome. Stein and Harry made sure he didn't stick around long because he took attention away from Debbie on stage bouncing around and was also a songwriter. That's not to knock Blondie. They are one of my favorite bands, but nothing Blondie ever did really nailed it home like X Offender off their first album. That was Valentine's song originally.

Cliff ain't my bag, and neither is Metallica. However, I don't think that anyone could possibly argue that the band didn't suffer musically from his death. Not just in his role as a bassist, but as the guy who really kind of acted as a band leader in terms of their sound and arranging songs. Most guitarists are fairly egotistical. Whether they have the talent to back that up or not. A bassist who is also the most gifted member in the band in terms of being a band leader isn't something most guitarists want. At least in a rock band. Punk is one of the few genres where that is generally the exception to the rule.

One of the things I love about Steve Harris. Its less about his playing/style for me and more about his character. Pure focus and a good songwriter. Yet... zero ego. The Early Days documentary is a fantastic doc on Maiden. Whether you are a fan or not.

Agreed, though Maiden is the only metal band I really care for. Most of that is due to the way Harris plays and the rest is just the fact that they have incredible songs. While he has his own unique thing, the way he drives his band is much more akin to a punk bassist than a metal bassist. Meaning that he drives the band. Not the guitarists. Add to that the fact that he is a great band member and all around good egg and he ranks highly among bassists for me, and I enjoy and respect their music. Even if I don't care for the genre as a whole

That's it ... You're banned. (j/k)

In all seriousness, though, as a the admittedly huge Rush fan that I am, I get how people don't like Geddy's voice or Rush's music. I don't agree with it, but I understand it. How any musician can not like Geddy's playing just does not compute in my head ...

I’m with you

The Bass line on ‘The Camera Eye’ wow… and he sings while doing that.

It's easy to not like his playing. I don't care for Jaco's playing either. Jaco didn't like my playing years ago, so who cares. Geddy may not like my playing. Who cares, that's why there's different styles.

Hmmm... Out of all the bassists out there, the one that who I just don't get is:

Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers)

What is wrong with him - or even the band themselves? I'm not into the RHCP's music. But whenever you hear one of their songs on the radio, you hardly hear any bass. It's like it's lost in the mix somewhere.

i don't get it. 90% of his playing is near the bridge on the treble strings. Wouldn't he have been better served with a baritone guitar?
