Les Claypool doesn't know what he's doing. I don't think he could play in a regular band that he didn't write all the "songs" for. I don't care for Carl Thompson basses, either.

Stanley Clarke, 99% of Jaco Pastorius' recorded output, Mark King, Bootsy Collins, pretty much anyone who plays flashy show-off bass instead of keeping it "in the pocket".

(Edited)

Changed my mind.
Don't think I want to be in this one.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

While a lot of what you're all saying is a reflection of your own personal taste, I have to agree the the names mentioned. There are bands that can be listened to often and never get stale. None of the bassists mentioned fit into that class for me.

I respect all of these nguys band have most on my ITouch, they don't get a lot of playing time though.

I refuse to believe I am the only person who found Tal Wilkenfeld's solo album to be a turgid load of pointless muzak.

You are not. It's no surprise to me that she works with Jeff Beck. She is cut from the same cloth. While a good soloist for sure. Soloing isn't really anything to do with the instrument itself. A great soloist is a great soloist. Their choice of instrument is incidental. However, as a bassist I think if you take a solo and the bottom drops out of the rhythm section and everything dies. (Jaco and Tal are guilty of this) Then you aren't really fulfilling your role as a bassist. You are simply soloing and that can be done on anything. If the band suffers for you taking that solo. Then you shouldn't be taking it. This is why Jamerson to me was the epitome of bassists. He managed to pull off complicated, intricate melodic lines and NEVER let the groove suffer. Something that cannot be said about Jaco, Tal or any of the bassists in that school. Flea is an entirely different animal. His band simply plays to what he plays all the time. So the pocket is built around him. He is never in it. I know that may not be a popular opinion. Especially among my fellow bassists. However, in my opinion, or at least in music I enjoy. The bass is the foundation and part of the rhythm section first. Artistic self expression second. Play as fancy as you like. However, if you aren't pulling your weight as a member of the rhythm section maybe you should pick up a guitar. People love wanky guitar players apparently.

Paul McCartney and Geddy Lee.

I just don't get either. Neither bands have lived up to the hype I was given.

I thought of another one. Pino Palladino. Pretty good, but too muddy. And he will NEVER live up to the Ox in the who.
