A general rule of thumb is that any of the commonly used hardwoods will give you a very satisfactory tonal response and amount of sustain.I have solid body guitars made from mahogany, ash, black ash, alder, walnut, basswood and even plywood and they all sound great.Even relatively soft wood solid bodies such as those Fender is now releasing are very responsive and great sounding.

:D Thanks to all who answered my question on what wood for a Tele. My fears have been alleviated. BTM-KTM, I checked out Warmoths page and found it very interesting. From what I learned, I can't afford Koa or burl maple or any imported from Africa. Beautiful woods. Now I'm thinking of cutting down my 60 foot black walnut for a Tele body. Tired of raking up nuts, and the furry critters leave behind the ones they don't want. Kind of like selecting a wood. Thanks again.

Here's a Black Walnut tele someone made - I would not be embarrassed playing that:

It needs a neck pickup cover, though.

Hi 6mmholecutter, don't cut that black walnut down just yet, it will be worth ten or more times what it is now in a few years. :D

Normally it's southern swamp ash for bodies but I'd sure like to try out one of these. They've got the moisture content and milling problems with black ash under control and they look great. Just something to gaze at.

Because you're a perfectly normal guitar player?

I wouldn't entertain the idea of chopping down a tree and immediately working it into a guitar. The wood needs to be dried after cutting, usually this involves a temperature-controlled kiln and months or years of drying.
