I recently replaced my stolen vintage ph-1 boss phaser with a new ph-3 phase shifter..I'm having a helluva time replicating the old sound with the new pedal...any tips or am I gonna have to hunt down another pre-1980 phaser?..I havnt spent a ton of time with it yet but so far I'm not to thrilled with this pedal compared to my old one... :(

It could be that emulating the old pedal is not possible.

Try focusing on finding the new pedals strength instead. It's bound to have a sweet spot in there somewhere.

Sometimes, with new equipment, the ear has to adjust.

...or you could just go find the old pedal.

Hope this helps.

I am not a fan of the newer Boss Phase Shifter pedals, either...

Although a transition MXR Phase 90 graces my pedalboard (it's a late 70's block logo MXR with a script-logo circuit board in it), the earliest of Boss Phase Shifters are really sweet, subtle and rich sounding...one of my Phase Shifting Heroes (Waylon Jennings) relied on a Boss PH-1 for many years.

The later Boss models, not so much. They became too bright and processed-sounding, and the subtlety went out the window.

The old Ibanez Soundtank Phaser (PH5) pedals were a reasonable facsimile of the earlier Boss designs--but they were delicate and most didn't survive past the mid 90's; I haven't tried later models (the Tone-Lok series, for example), but you might check them out.

You might want to try picking up a used PH-2. They're not as expensive as the old PH-1 and -- unlike the PH-3 -- they are analog. I haven't compared the 2 pedals side by side, but I do own a PH-2 and like the sound

It's true that Boss's newer digital pedals have a different sound than the old analog ones.

That can be said for virtually any pedal that came in both flavours.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Well, ive spent some time with the pedal and it does do alot..but doesnt sound at all like the ph-1. :( .i may look at another brand but will probably just hunt down another pre-1980 ph-1. I honestly never considered the analog/digital thing.ive read the ph-2 doesn't sound like the ph-1 either.I've always been a boss user but maybe it's time to experiment a little.im now a little skeptical about replacing my analog delay with a boss digital delay so I might look int an mxr carbon copy or way huge aqua $@!& delay.. :?

There isn't much that can take the place of vintage gear other than more vintage gear. The components of even the analogue pedals are so much more consistent in quality that even if they build a pedal faithful to the original with new components,it's unlikely that it would sound like the original.Try looking in on a site such as http://www.reverb.com they have mountains of vintage gear at any given time, the chances are that you'll find what you want there.
