Jimi was talented, but without his effects pedals and the stage ballyhoo that he stole from Buddy Guy and Howlin Wolf he was just above average. But as a songwriter, he was actually stronger. There I said it, wanted to a long time.

SRV does nothing for me. An endless parade of notes, riffs...........boring. whats with the fruity clothes. Gosh, I said that too?

I would rather listen to Neil Young's dreamy slightly out of tune rambling Les Paul, and missed notes than any of the shredders. A regular guy who plays with soul.

This is a great iconoclast thread.

I run the risk of a few people hating me here but hey, "you can some of the people some of the time but you can't please all of the people all of the time" -I think Bob Dylan said that Abraham Lincoln said that!!
Seriously, I've never understood the big deal about John Mayer. Sorry, but to me he just sings soppy love songs with some pentatonic blues scale solos thrown in the middle!! Gee, give the guy a signature Fender guitar cause he's mastered the Blues Scale!! If that's all you need then I should have my own endorsement as well!!
I suppose I'm exagerating a bit there -because I'm not a very good singer but you get what I mean I'm sure!

Top of my list would be Clapton. I totally understand why other folks may enjoy him, I just don't.

Clapton
Zappa
David Gilmour (appreciated his early stuff, but not so much lately - last 20yrs)
Zack Wylde (Give the harmonic squeaks a rest for crying out loud!!!)

And as far as overall bands go that I just didn't get why people went so nuts for - The Who and The Doors.

Wow! That to me is a complete lack of taste! (apart from Zack Wylde) Everyone's entitled to an opinion though but I really think you should try and play something like "Dark Side Of The Moon" from start to finish, note for note, and then reconsider! Or even listen to one of Gilmour's live albums like "Live at Gdansk". As for Clapton, well he's been known to use all 12 notes in a blues solo which, apart from Hendrix or BB King -isn't done very often...then there's Zappa, well he basically used all 12 notes in every solo!!! If that isn't impressive I don't know what is! Maybe a fretless guitar? -because Zappa was known to play one occasionally! :)

Hi there.....it's "kumbyya" rob here (*waves at arth1*),
This one went a bit "off the rails" so editing was done.
Let's keep it about guitar playing and let TMZ or Huffington etc. handle the other stuff.
Enjoy yer weekend folks, pick up an instrument and play it.
All the best,
rob
