A guitarist who does not impress me with his chops but I still love to listen to is JJ Cale.

I saw one youtube video of him where he demonstrated some technical proficiency but most of the time his style was very simple. The tone and emotion in his playing knocks my socks off.

Yep.
I'd rather listen to a simple "hack" (note facetiousness font) like Cale, Hound Dog Taylor or Luther Perkins than a "maestro" like Malmsteen any day.

Has no one mentioned the 'Nuge'?? I dig his music, but the GUY is a pompous A-hole. He says he has no respect for anyone who drinks or smokes. Rock and roll is a celebration of drugs and alcohol. When he spits on the audience and gives you finger he kinda loses me. Course I'll still CRANK it when 'free for all' comes on.

+1
The guy does more harm than good for his cause(s) (which I firmly don't care about, either way...) I like some of his songs, but his manner of expressing himself is off-putting, to say the least.

No matter what their politics are, I don't want to be preached to, talked down to or told how to think by a performer...nor do I care what they believe, either...unless they believe it's ok to molest children...oops, guess I won't be going to see Teddy play anytime soon! (Pele Massa).

Shut up and perform. I didn't come to a political rally, I came to a concert!

Of course, I'm very, VERY apolitical, so all political discussions disgust me rather quickly.

I knew that eventually someone was going to eff up this perfectly civil thread with some stupid nonsense.

Rolling Stone had Nils Cline listed at something like 37 in all-time greats, now I'm a huge Wilco fan and I will give Nils props for being experimental and pushing boundaries, it's the experimental stuff that I don't like on Wilco albums. IMO, Nils Cline benefits from Jeff Tweedy's songwriting more than Nils's guitar playing. But obviously Jeff Tweedy likes Nils' guitar playing...

Hmmm ... where to start with this one? This one may require a list:

1) Look, I will buy the "tutelage" thing until the late sixties or so from the guitar playing standpoint only. But Keith was always about the groove and the songwriting, not about solos. There are legions of guitarists still trying to figure out volumes of riffs he has laid down.
2) Every album from Beggars Banquet ('67?) until Some Girls ('78?) was brilliant ... That is crystal clear to me, and I am not even that big of a Stones fan.
3) And forget the playing ... there are great players everywhere. What transforms musician into rock stars and then eventually super stars is the SONGS. And Keith wrote a Mount Everest of amazing material.

His skill is better wrought in the studio, not unlike his museChuck Berry. Unlike others, his live performances are not as stellar.

I don't completely agree with that, but that is okay ... I definitely respect your opinion. I just think that sometimes in this modern day, we expect Joe Bonomassa-esque flair when often a more subtle but heavy groove may be missed. For me, I have grown to have much more of an appreciation for him than I had decades ago. Your point is very well said, though.

I'm thinking he should be as technically clean and articulate in live performance as he is on recordings.

That was Mick Taylor's corner.

My sentiments as well.

Now as to guitarists that IMO are overrated ? Zakk Wylde. Just how many squeals can you call guitar playing ?
