Top of my list would be Clapton. I totally understand why other folks may enjoy him, I just don't.

Clapton
Zappa
David Gilmour (appreciated his early stuff, but not so much lately - last 20yrs)
Zack Wylde (Give the harmonic squeaks a rest for crying out loud!!!)

And as far as overall bands go that I just didn't get why people went so nuts for - The Who and The Doors.

Age range demographics would be an interesting addition to this thread.

This is interesting. Some of the players listed here are among my favorites. Just goes to show the wide variety of tastes.

I have a few guitarists that don't do too much for me. Although these guys are all exceptional players.

Hendrix Especially the live material, too noisy.

Via.

Satriani (Surfing With The Alien is an exception)

Sorry though, I do like a lot of Bonamassa's material.

Joe Bonamassa, Al DiMeola, Yngvie, shredders. Great technique but no soul. I watched a video of Zakk Wylde doing Voodoo Child and cringed. It is a blues tune ultimately, not a shred fest. I am 58 yo and first heard Jimi when I was 12 yo. My family would agree that I have not been the same since. ;)

Talk about Kenny channeling SRV, but he is channeling Albert. I would to see Kenny live before I make a final decision on him. My influences all had a distinctive sound that can recognized instantly whereas shredders to me sound alike. Just my 2 cents.

I agree with this 100%. If Skynet built a guitar player instead of a Terminator, it would be him. The "something" missing is a soul.

Skynet became self-aware on August 29, 1997. Happy Birthday, Skynet!

For me I think it is when I first heard someone and how old and the situation. For new listeners to Jimi have a perspective of saturation of his music in that the whole catalog is available. For me Jimi was only avail on short playlists on FM and friends or cousins portable turntable. So each song was revelation. Early Zep was like that. Hearing How many more times for the 1st time was a visceral experience. Same with the my 1st time hearing whole lotta love! It was like being run over by a truck, I never heard those sounds before and each band, YES w/Steve Howe, B B King, Steppenwolf, Cream, 10 Years After, etc. just grabbed me and my friends and dragged us along a sonic highway.

Too often in my opinion the new breed are too clean and polished and monotone. Rock and roll is a rough visceral experience for me as that is what my 1st experiences to it were. For newer listeners it is the more polished player which may make the earlier generation of players seem rough or noisy. Just a thought and as long as it moves you than it is the right music for you,

For whatever reason; this is strictly a matter of taste. No right or wrong answers.

I think about this from time to time, especially when a thread comes up celebrating a particular player. About ten per cent of the time, I'm like, meh. I've always been a Clapton fan, but I fully understand why he doesn't exactly thrill some people nowadays. What prompted this post is the current thread about Gov't Mule: while Warren Haynes is obviously a super musician and seems to be a very humble guy who also has great tone, his playing kind of lulls me to sleep. Yeah, I know it makes no sense, but there it is.

Another guy I just don't get is Joe Bonamassa. Technically proficient, sure, but in the end it sounds to me like a lot of notes in search of, well, something. At the opposite end of the spectrum, when it comes to a guy as rudimentary as say, Neil Young, most of the time he sounds okay.

Guess I'm just getting old and cranky...

rudorama, this became an interesting thread and I found myself agreeing with everyone relative to your posts opening line lol. Doc's quip adds another angle for consideration but will need more pages to include all of the other guitarists not yet mentioned :D
Welcome to the Forum Joe in Mobile you've added a valuable two cents good to have you here.
