MIM just stands for Made in Mexico.

And respectively...
MIA -Made in America.
MIJ -Made in Japan.

I haven't seen a lot of MiJ's out there in recent years...occasionally you'll see 'em on the used market.

Right off the floor?

Made in the USA.....Of course, you're going to have to pay for that sort of sweet setup as well....

The MiM's are about a quarter of the price as the base model American standards...

Personally? If you have money to spend, and demand "the best", then yeah...go for the US model that generally prices out starting at a 1000 bucks or higher

But if it was me?

You can pick up a MiM Telecaster for 400 bucks or so....probably even less if you're willing to buy slightly used (there's a lot of that stuff out there right now.)

Or, better yet...hitting the market for a US telecaster for maybe 5-600 bucks that's in good shape...and American made.

(Don't know how you feel about used guitars...)

(Or you could get an Indonesian Squier Affinity for about 160 bucks new...it's getting good marks on action and playability. You could probably find a used one for around a 100 dollars or so.)

I think the question here is:

1. What's your budget.
2. Are you willing to check out used guitars? If so, you're going to save a lot of money...maybe even get a top line guitar for slightly more than the MiM new.

Otherwise? Lots of teles out there...good luck....

np. One thing I do with a lot of guitars (especially if they're of the cheaper variety...I'm not picky about what it says on the headstock) if it has a plastic nut, I'll get a custom nut cut for it. It's not a high dollar thing to have one made (50 bucks or so to have a pro do it) and it really makes a huge difference in terms of your tone on that guitar.

But yeah....the used market is great. Pawn shops are sort of fun to check out as well...

I'd rather buy a high-end MIM Telecaster than a Highway One. I've never really played the MIA Standards, though.

The Deluxe series out of Mexico are great guitars, but cheaper than the Americans.

The Special Edition Custom Telecaster FMT is made in Korea and
they sell for around 600.00 has 2 humbuckers and Mohogany body
and neck. Most stores seem to have them in stock/
