I've always enjoyed listening to Nick Seymour from New Zealand band Crowded House, very unique style, leaves pauses where most guys wouldn't.
Listen to songs - Its only Natural, Don't dream it's over and Four seasons in one day.

I've always preferred groove bass players rather than the million mile an hour guys.

John Klingberg's bass line on Van Morrison's Moondance is amazing - these guys had minimal recording takes back then - the magic is always in the spontaneity hey.

Tommy Cogbill's bass line on Son of a Preacher man is also one of my favorites and along with the Moondance bass line has been extensively talked about in many forums.

John Paul Jones, Led Zepplin II, fantastic bass lines - awesome album.

Bass line for Smooth Operator - Sade - real smooth - bass solo is amazing.
Bob Babbit - Signed Sealed Delivered - love it.
John Deacon in the band Queen - super creative - awesome.
How could I forget Tony Levin.
You could bloody go on for ever hey - where do you stop.
I guess these guys capture the song in an artistic way - it's amazing some bass players you think are quite handy ( especially in cover bands ) don't necessarily know how to create a good line.
That's what's great about everyone - the individuality - and when it comes to bass playing - Everyone has there strengths and weakness's.

How could I forget - Lee Sklar.
Also - I feel Paul Mac should always get a mention, the Beatles inspired so many people - songs like Hey Bulldog, Rain and Come together - not bad.

Hi Candycolared,

I know you are new here and may not realize it, but in the 6 years I've been here this topic has been beaten into a coma. So you probably won't get many responses.

You have very good taste. Tommy Cogbill is one of the most under-rated and under-cited players of all time.

Might do better posting this in the P, J or Other Bass sections than in the general interest Lounge area. You leave out several primary influences many would cite though, which is a little puzzling, but so few people cite Cogbill it is obvious you are sincere and knowledgeable.

FYI: Paul Spencer Dedman played bass in Sade with female vocalist Sade Abu from 1984 till 1994 when Sade's "Love Deluxe" world tour wrapped. That's him on the solo you cited. After the tour ended in 1994 several of Sade's core musicians including Dedman, Stuart Matthewman (guitar & sax) and Andrew Hale (keys) formed a new British based R&B band called Sweetback and they have released two albums featuring various vocalists on both albums and from the two albums they released four singles. While the Sweetback project was not as successful as the Sade project, it also produced some very good tracks! They haven't released anything since 2004 and I don't know if they are still at it or not.

And...I have to ask, are you Nick Seymour?

Hey brotherdave.
Appreciate the kind words man and ha ha no I'm not Mr Seymour.
You're right these sort of topics get beaten to a pulp but I quess I tried to put a different spin on things.
Influences can be so varied between people - actually my biggest influence was my bass teacher ( @ 16 years old ) who put me on the right track from day one, amazing teacher, player and singer.
Thanks for the spiel on the Sade stuff - wow, very informative.

The late Ronnie Lane from Faces, is missing from bass player lists.

I think Jerry Scheff might be the best bassist I've ever heard, especially with Elvis. His tone, his playing.
