I hung 100-lb mirrors using 2 of these. I guarantee you, one will easily hold a guitar.

They do. Molly anchors are supposedly even more secure. But the problem is that you don't just hang a guitar there and let it hang - it gets used, and the gypsum gets fatigued, and one day you have the bolt and the surrounding wall jump out.

After experiencing that twice, I realized that solid wood walls are far better, and well worth the upfront extra costs.

A sobering reality indeed.

Which is why I chose the tack that I ultimately took. My roof could blow off with the next monsoon windstorm but that slat board ain't goin' nowhere.

It's possible I guess. But I have to be honest, I've never seen one of those toggles do that to a wall. I've seen EZ anchors do that. I'm not exactly sure what you're referring to when you say Molly Bolt, I'm sure there are 100 different kinds.

Either way, it sounds like you have it worked out. I personally don't hang my guitars on the wall, I like them in cases. So I really have no experience with that happening. Show us some pics when you're done. 8)

I could not hit the stud the first time I put up wall hangers. I must have put 6 holes in the wall, all around the stud. I don't think the stud finder was working properly. I tapped on the wall to find the others. The next two went fine.

Molly bolts are more popular in Europe than here - they're a type of expansion bolt that unfolds like an umbrella. They have more support against the back of the wall than a toggle bolt, and can allegedly support bigger loads, but you need to get the right bolt length for the thickness of the wall, and they cannot ever be removed once put in place. Unlike toggle bolts, which you can unscrew and the back part falls down behind the wall for future archeologists to wonder about.

Can't show you any pics when done, I'm afraid, because for the last few years I've been living in a wood house where this isn't a problem. I just posted an example pic I found on the web - what I experienced was worse. (To fix tearouts like that, you basically have to cut out a bigger hole around it, put in a plate behind it, and plug it with gypsum. It's a pain to do, and less sturdy than before.)

The toggle (molly) bolts will suffice, and easily. I use them to install towel bars for my bathroom remodels. Even if the framing pattern in your home on the moon base was 16" or 24", it still might not be where you wanted to hang your babies.
If you're concerned about the drywall breaking out, just put some "Alex" caulking behind the hanger plate, wiping off any exess after tightening the toggle bolts.

It's just not worth doing the surgery to install a wood panel in the wall, then re-drywalling, re-texturing and re-painting. Not to mention the fine layer of dust that will now be covering everything in the room. No way, dude.

I'm a bit worried about those - can't you get a domino crash, breaking multiple guitars instead of one?

The pic above is the wall that gave me fits. The other walls are normal. You may not be able to see from the pic, but the studs are in strange places. However, it's up now and every screw is solid.
